"Silent" Pump

Post by Sanatarium » Wed Apr 20, 2005 3:04 pm

Hello, Im just wondering if anyone has reccomendations, or specific bad experiences, as to a very quiet pump? Im looking for 1/2" fittings as well. AC or DC, doesnt matter, although Ive heard DC pumps are quieter, but offer less performance.

Better yet, does anyone have any information on using gas-type refrigerants for coolant? In a pump-less setup perhaps? I have a passive heatsink radiator on the top of my case, and according to this article, it seems that a lack of airflow, or a warmer temperature at the radiator is necesary to keep the refrigrant moving. Perhaps this is an option??

Quietest pump you can go with is the 1048 with the impellar mod. Its a pretty weak pump though. two in series gives the same performance as a mcp600 though.

There have been a handfull of comparisons between the 1048 and MCP350/Laing DDC. Seen them go both ways. Some say the DDC has more of a whine but is still pretty quiet. MCP350 is also smaller and DC which is a lot easier to deal with.

if you want absolute quietest pump Id say 1048 after modding the impellar. If you arent that anal about it Id say mcp350.

Without knowing the components it's impossible to give any useful answer. The quietest pump may be totally inadequate to the cooling task.

I would suggest reading this thread at Pro-Cooling. The most important part of the initial post is:
This now gives us a predicted correlation for the relationship between the final CPU temperature as affected by the flow rate, but more importantly also after factoring in the pump heat.

Eheim 1046, WB delta = 100W * 0.187C/W = 18.7C, Water delta = (100 + 1.5)W * 0.045C/W = 4.6C, Total CPU temperature = 23.3C above ambient
Eheim 1048, WB delta = 17.8C, Water delta = 103 * 0.044 = 4.5C, Total CPU Temp = 22.3C above ambient
Eheim 1250, WB delta = 17.2C, Water delta = 109 * 0.043 = 4.7C, Total CPU Temp = 21.9C above ambient
MCP600, WB delta = 16.9C, Water delta = 108 * 0.042 = 4.5C, Total CPU Temp = 21.4C above ambient
MCP650, WB delta = 16.8C, Water delta = 115 * 0.042 = 4.8C, Total CPU Temp = 21.6C above ambient
MD-15R, WB delta = 16.5C, Water delta = 122 * 0.041 = 5.0C, Total CPU Temp = 21.5C above ambient
MD-20RZ, WB delta = 15.9C, Water delta = 131 * 0.040 = 5.2C, Total CPU Temp = 21.1C above ambient
MD-30RZ, WB delta = 15.7C, Water delta = 150 * 0.039 = 5.9C, Total CPU Temp = 21.6C above ambient
So a 1048 in the tested loop is trivially worse than the others.

He (Cathar) concludes:
Recommended pumps:

Performance: Iwaki MD-20RZ
Jack-of-all-trades: Swiftech MCP600/AquaXtreme 50Z
Silence focused: Eheim 1048

And also from that thread
As expected, the 2 x Eheim 1048's pretty much exactly match a single Swiftech MCP600, and provides the best all-round solution when silence is required.

Cool, thanks for the information, what is this impeller mod that you spoke of jamesavery? If its the same one ive heard of, ehiems dont really need it, more so the danner pumps that need it, or so i read..

I read this article on pro forum and think you should look again.

Difference between cheapest and most expensive (and noisy) set up?
2C!

A good quite pump like 1048 will work within 1C of others.

Not sure what you guys are doing with your set up's, but 1C is not worth that much money to me. I am more concerned about running my system 100% all the time which water cooling allows :)
