Nvidia 790i Ultra chipset cooling

Post by ncomben » Thu Mar 05, 2009 1:04 am

Hi all
I'm investigating the possibility of implementing a quiet water cooling system just to cool my motherboard chipset.

I've got excellent CPU cooling and good airflow through the case.. my two GPU's rarely ramp up their fan speed (basically when playing Crysis).

The problem is after 30mins of playing the aforementioned game, the computer will generally freeze (no pun intended!).

On reseting the machine and inspecting the bios hardware readings... the Northbridge temperate reads 80C or more (currently set to 1.44v for Prime Stability).

The board chipset is a Fusion system with 3/8 connectors...

Any ideas?

Your first action should be to re-seat the current cooler, making sure its got good thermal connection to the chip.

If you've got a good airflow through the case the original cooler should be sufficient.

BTW, what mobo model do you have?

Cheers

As it says in my sig... Asus Striker II Extreme.

That is a good point actually, I now recall people saying that the whole heatsink/pipe assembly should be removed, cleaned up and decent thermal paste applied.

I've ordered some TIM remover. I'll remove the heatsinks, clean them up and apply my AS5.
