What pump do you use?

Post by gcwebbyuk » Fri Jan 21, 2011 5:51 am

I currently run an EK2.2 pump which seems to be pretty good for quiet/silent use.

At 80% it is barely audible, and even at 100% it is only just noticeable.

However, I am thinking of adding the new EK RAM block to my loop which currently consists of

EK-DCP 2.2 - 12V DC Pump and EK-Reservoir Combo DCP 2.2
EK-Supreme HF - Full Nickel
EK-FC460 GTX - Nickel with Backplate
EK Nickel Motherboard Block
XSPC RX240 Radiator
XSPC RS240 Radiator

I am a little concerned that there won't be enough flow to keep everything as cool as it could be, so thinking of a bigger / better pump.

EK have suggested I go for the 2.2's bigger brother, but I won't have enough room in the case to fit it, so thinking of a bay res/pump combo like the XSPC ones.

Why bother with a ram block at all? I haven't heard of any ram DIMMs that use more than 10W anyways.

If you must increase pump power, you could use two pumps in series/parallel.

Waterflow speeds have repeatedly been shown to be of little relevance, unless it slows down to a crawl - which won't happen with those few components you have.

The simplified explanation is that while slower moving water spends more time per loop in the watercoolers, taking on more heat and thus getting warmer, it also spends more time in the radiators, giving off more heat and thus getting cooled down more.

EK just want to sell you more of their stuff.

I'd keep the EK 2.2

Also, the EK reservoir attachment is great for adding a little mass/ quieting the pump. Have you tried placing the pump on Petra's gel-stuff or a similar product? I find that pump functionally inaudible at full speed- and I'm using some pretty sensitive mics in my recording!

It will not fit. The side fans come very close to the edge of any mATX mobo. Besides, those all-in-one WCs are not great for noise, you are better off with a good HSF. You can do much better than the stock HSF for both noise & cooling, tho. With the right HS (read -- big but short enough to fit in the case, and with widely spaced fins) you can run it w/ just the side case fans.
