RAM memory question

Post by leppard717 » Sat Sep 08, 2007 7:51 pm

Forgive my lack of wisdom in this particular area, but I am going to swap the RAM in my laptop to make it run faster, and I got confused along the way. On HP's parts site, it says I need PC2-5300 DDR2 SoDIMM SDRAM. I would really appreciate it if anyone could tell me the difference between PC2-5300 and PC-5300 RAM.

there isnt any difference. it is to differentiate from DDR which may run at similar speeds. (but, no stock DDR will run at 5300 speeds, to my knowledge.

It's like Fayd said. PC-5300 stands for DDR modules, while PC2-5300 stands for DDR2 modules, which should fit you.

I also use HP, nc8430, properly tweaked to consume as less power as posible, while maintaining original speed and have already upgraded memory to 2 GB with A-DATA PC2-5300.

I'm just curious, we already have 965GM platforms for mobile computers, which support DDR2-800, but I haven't seen any of those RAM on the market yet. How can that be, if manufacturers are already producing modules that work over 1600MHz for desktops. I for one love performamce gain that produces minimum to almost no adidtional power consumption.

PC-5300 DDR mem, non existent
It's true, since many shop owners sometimes tend to just write it down wrong. Here is a perfect example. Apple DDR ram being sold as DDR PC-5300, which would mean non-DDR2 modules. However, if you look closely on the picture of RAM itself, you can see that it's actually DDR2.

But saying DDR 667 is nonexistend isn't completly true. They aren't sold in the shops, but TCCD RAM chips can almost all be easilly overclocked over 600Mhz (300 Bus), with exception of some cheap variants.

lets call it "Officialy" non existend (jedec standard)

but yeah, some sites just wrote it down in a hurry, or the staff that puts it to web is ... noneducated

I'm just curious Mad_Man, you wouldn't happened to be from Slovenia, since I used to play Warcraft 3 online with someone that shares exact same nick.

Thanks a lot everybody. I looked on Best Buy's website and they have PC2 and PC-5300 that are both DDR2, so how does it differentiate, or is the site mistaken?

I suddenly got flashbakcs of how I already received that answer two times before. You wouldn't hsppened to be playing Counterstrike on german servers?

It seems it really is a mistake, since I don't recollect ever hearing of DDR modules being sold in PC-5300, but just to be certain, pick DDR2, that was told to be compatible by HP.
