Increased temps... Any guesses why?

Post by Trav1s » Mon Feb 01, 2010 8:11 am

Here are the system specs:

Gigabyte GA-g31m-es2l
2 gigs (1x2) Crucial DDR2-800
e5200 processor with box intel heatsink/fan
160Gig Maxtor SATA3 HD
Seasonic PS (I forget the model at this time)
LG DVD burner
generic mATX tower with one case fan running about 900 RPMS

Background - I built the machine last spring and it has been very stable and reliable. I have slowly dropped the processor core voltage to 1.175 in the bios during the three weeks without any problems.

I arrived at the office at 9:00 and the temps were in the upper 40's C while the machine was at rest. AVG ran from 7-7:30 this morning which will bump the temps some but the mid 40's temps were over an hour later and it is never a problem before. I updated speedfan to 4.40 and the temps remained the same. With the case open it is currently sitting at 42 C. I know the temps are not a problem but the higher temp has sped up the HS fan and has created more noise.

Any suggestions :?

When you have you cleaned dust out of that system last time? In dust build up it might clog in the heatsink and increase the temperatures.

Under volted fans can fail to start or start and stop as they get dirty/worn with age.

what heatsink?

upper 40's would not worry me tho.

Crappy Intel pushpins? If you push on the cooler do the temps change?

These are CPU temperatures, right?

What was a typical idle/load temperature before this started?

undervolting the cpu is the right approach... it's the voltage the creates the heat that speeds up the cpu fan.

but you really need to get rid of the stock fan/cooler setup.

It does not look dirty/dusty in the case but I will hit it with some canned air and see if that will help.

Temps increased 5-7 degrees C which is why I posted.

As for the failing undervolted fan... I will try another one. It was a left-over and I have no idea how old it is. I needed a system on the cheap when I put this one together.

As of the box intel heatsink/fan... I did the system on the cheap and will consider a different HS/Fan in the future that is budget friendly.
