Help with new silent computer.

Post by Nevarion » Wed Dec 15, 2004 2:15 pm

This is my first attempt to get a silent PC. As I'm new to SPCR, I want some help with my configuration.

Configuration after X-mas:
mb Asus a7v600-x
athlon xp 2400+ mobile (45W)
Zalman 7000Alcu modded with a Nexus silent case fan. (as silent as possible)
Generic PSU 300W ATX modded with a 120mm Nexus "orange" (hopefully @9V or less.)
Ati Radeon 9600pro with Zalman "bigheatsinkwithtwoheatpipes" (dont remember the model name)

Things i already got: A case, 2 papst 80mm "12dB", the 300W PSU and the MB.

My question is: what V should the papst run at to be as quiet as the Nexus 120mm@9V?

Excuse my bad English, I'm from Sweden, it's late and i'm sick so...

The Papst 8412NGLE and 8412N/2GLE fans I have make more noise at 5V than a Nexus 120mm fan at 9V. This is of course in free air. The Nexus makes a bit more wind noise (as it moves more air) but the motor noise of the Papst fans is louder than that.

When you put the fans in a PSU things might be different. As the larger amount of air moved by the Nexus will create more turbulence inside the PSU.

Are 2 Papst 8412@5V able to vent the case if I use one as an intake fan? Is it possible perhaps or is it just to forget and go buy 2 Nexus 92mm instead?

When you use a 120mm Nexus fan in the PSU and a 80mm Papst as exhaust, you have a maximum theoretical air movement of 38+20=58CFM. If you then put a 80mm Papst in your only intake opening you restict that to only 20CFM. For a lot of people this feels counter intuitive, but fans in series are restricted to the slowest fan.

You should only use an intake fan, when you need it for extra harddisk cooling and there are other openings to provide the rest of the airflow. Or if you build a possitive pressure setup. But that is a bit complicated with a 120mm fan in your PSU. And not what we are talking about here.

If a 92mm Nexus fan fits your case it will be more quiet and cooler than the 80mm Papst. I can't tell you if the Papst is enough for your setup. I have no experience with how much heat the video card produces. All my current systems have video on the motherboard.

I think i go for another 92mm Nexus, then i can have a airfilter in the intake fan mounting. My compucase has starting to get stuffed with dust since i bought a new carpet.
