for the past few days i've been trying to get rid of this soft whine i thought was comming from my case. damn, and i just found out that it is actually comming from my nec multisync 950+ 19inch crt monitor! CRAP i wasted so much time trying to tweak my comp like making a hdd suspension etc etc.

so how do i get rid of this? its a whine/buzz comming from inside the monitor. i've tried replugging the power cords, but to no avail. I think it might've gotten louder when i was playing games just now...

honestly i think all CRT make some high frequency whine like you're describing after some aging. I suggest you consider an LCD instead.

Some have complained about noisy LCDs on this forum.

arrg this is so damn rediculous. I mean, the monitor is the last place one would expect as a noise source

I have a number of CRT monitors which can make unacceptable irritating high pitched whine noises. I have found that reducing the refresh rate and/or resolution and/or using interlacing can sometimes eliminate the whine.

Experiment with a resolution of 640x480 and reduce the refresh rate to 60hz. If that eliminates the whine, then experiment with bumping up the resolution and/or refresh rate.

For my main workstation's 21" CRT monitor, I have found the ideal compromise between high resolution, reduced flicker, and eliminating coil whine is 2048x1536 interlaced at 85hz. It looks awesome and keeps the monitor silent!

Well, my Iiyama 19 inch buzzes too and my previous Iiyama buzzed even worse. But if I would quiet down all computer equipment, CRT included, I would be able to hear my heartbeat - and would be annoyed by it. Now how could I silence that ???????

By the time everything is so quiet and you silence your heartbeat, you're not going to hear anything at all.


I have a Samsung SyncMaster (17" flat-glass CRT). Edit: I got it in 2002. Sometimes it whines upon switch-on, but only for a couple of minutes. In operation there is a very faint buzz which does not change in frequency across all resolutions/refresh rates (mains hum?), but it is inaudible from a sensible viewing distance with the PC off.

I can still tell it's on, just as I can every other CRT monitor/TV - I must be able to pick up some insanely high-pitched noise*, nobody else I know can do it - but just so you know that not all CRTs are bad. A few LCDs can be worse so do a search to see if anyone has a model you're looking at. You can most likely return it if it's noisy, but you may not notice that until the components wear in a little, and you don't want the hassle!


*We had cats messing up our flowerbeds a year ago so my parents installed an ultrasonic emitter to scare them away. Only problem was, I could hear it (even in my bedroom!) and it was very irritating. They soon tried something else However, my aunt uses one (different make) too - fortunately I can't hear it inside her house...

My previous Iiyama CRT, 19 inch also but older model, had to be repaired and after the repair for about two weeks it was dead-quiet. After that it started to buzz even worse, so I had it replaced with a HM903DT-B.
I think there may be some coil noise involved in this CRT buzzing issue, if the manufacturers would care about it they could find a solution to make it dissapear.

My previous 19" Viewsonic was whining and buzzing like hell at all refresh rates and all resolutions, that was pretty annoying since everything else was nearly silent. So I decided to get a LCD instead. I'll never go back with CRTs again!

I don't think the manufacturers care about coil buzz right now. Some major manufacturers are not making CRTs anymore. Expect to see more and more LCDs in a near future. It's the end of CRTs...

My Iiyama 19" TFT (Circa 2002 ) screeches constantly. it's only been since I've got a second screen that I realise just how bad it is. I've heard it's the inverters for the screen illumination so after more research I'm going to cut and paste so to speak

My Samsung 19" CRT whines when I switch to a lower resolution sometimes. I usually run it at 1600 by 1200 at 60hz, but low resolutions, particulary those used by Dos games, can make a very high pitched whine. Power cycling the monitor usually fixes it though.

My 19" Samtron 96P whines too. I cannot wait to get a new lcd monitor.

I've got a 17" NEC FE770 - got it near the end of 2003 and it was a higher end model at the time. It squeals on and off ... can't wait to get an LCD...

Anybody have recommendations for a silent LCD?

I've heard of people silencing coil whine in PSUs with candle wax or special goop, so it might work in a CRT but I haven't heard of anyone who's actually tried it.

But if you open up your CRT be very careful as there are some very high voltages in there!

99.9% of the people in this forum should not open their monitor cases. The voltages can be 50,000 or more, and can be stored in capacitors even when the monitor is turned off.

Not the same as putting goo on a 12V motherboard coil.

The capacitors in CRTs can hold most of their charge for 10 years, assuming you don't short the terminals. So even old monitors could be potenially lethal.

My stupid Sony LCD monitor has a fan!!!!! And it is a small high speed unit with a speed sensor wire. If the speed sensore does not detect signal the monitor does not power up!!!!

You could replace it with a very slow 80mm fan and some kind of adaptor/duct if it's really that bad.

Some CRT's have fans -- I have a 17" Hitachi CRT that was manufactured in 1992 -- and it still works! It is a bit too noisy...and it is certainly the loudest part of the system.

BTW, wouldn't switching on the CRT when it is unplugged, or unplugging it while it is turned on discharge the capacitors? Also, 50K volts in and of itself is not necessarily deadly. It would also take a certain amount of current to do damage -- and caps discharge instantaneously -- with lots of sparks! So, it is to be avoided, to be sure!

A long time ago, when I was working on small engines (lawn mowers and the like), I touched the spark plug wire while the things were running -- they are something like 20K-25K volts! It ain't fun, but it certainly doesn't have any (noticeable?) lasting effects!

You might look for a monitor at the store that has its transformer outside the monitor, in a "brick" on the power cord (aka "wall wart"). That way, the monitor won't need a fan inside it to cool off the transformer.

I have never had CRT whine. I use 16 bit color instead of 32 bits (I can't tell the difference) and don't go higher than 85 Hz refresh rate.
