Is VIA K8M800 really for low-end ?

Post by ladislav2 » Wed Aug 10, 2005 1:38 pm

I have searched through the Internet many hours, but I can't get any results to my problem. I hope you help me a bit a gyus ;) I'd like to build some kind of linux / windows server which would have apache and some minor daemons running, for home use mainly. I'm gonna choose the chipset VIA K8M800 with microATX motherboard (MSI K8MM-V), because I HAVE to put it in a custom case (uATX).

What makes this chipset a low-end chipset ? Is it really a performance ? I don't need a powerful graphic card, integrated one will be sufficient, as well as only one PCI socket would be used. I am afraid that a low-end means, that this mobo will never use even a half of athlon64 performance. Am I right ? I'd like to plug a 200GB HDD SATA, would this chipset work with this HDD efficently ? I don't need any high-level server based system ;) but I'm not sure whether application of this chipset would be very suitable...

If you answered my questions, I would be very thankful ;)

 oh heck no..

That board will be beaten in benchmarks by a fair margin by nForce based boards, but that VIA chipset is nowhere near half speed. If this is going to be used as a light-use server (sounds like it), I'm quite certain you'll never notice the difference (speed wise) between different motherboard chipsets.

I'm using a KM400 (similar mentality for Socket A) for pretty much the same purpose, no problems.

Beware though VIA isn't known for good & timely Linux drivers. Most drivers are for older core versions.
