Got bored of my system making so much noise...

Post by CoreFusion » Thu Oct 27, 2005 3:51 pm

Ok, so I have a water-cooled system, but because of my own mistake and stupidity in installing it, it makes a lot of noise. Mainly because of the radiator, it's located above the 5, 25" slots so all the noises from inside the computer are very clear plus the fan is not silent. For the record: My PC was a lot quieter before installing the water-cooling system when i was cooling all components with air.

So what do to?

I decided to get a new case for my computer plus I need heat sinks for my CPU and GPU and I also decided to buy a WD Raptor for Windows and programs to speed up things a bit. The goal is to get a LOT quieter system than my current one.

My current system:

Case: Antec Plus 1080AMG
CPU: Intel P4 3.0 Ghz (Northwood)
Motherboard: ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe
Memory: 2 x 512 DDR (Kingston)
GPU: Club3D Radeon 9800XT
Soundcard: Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
DVD: some dvd-drive
PSU: Antec Truepower 430W
Hard-drives: 1x80 + 1x120 + 1x160 and 2x200 (Total of 5 drives)

So as you can see, there are many sources of heat and sound.

What I have planned (new things market with *):

Case: *Antec P180
CPU: Intel P4 3.0 Ghz (Northwood)
Motherboard: ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe
Memory: 2 x 512 DDR (Kingston)
GPU: Club3D Radeon 9800XT
Soundcard: Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
DVD: some dvd-drive
PSU: Antec Truepower 430W
Hard-drive: *WD Raptor 36,7 Gb

So I will reduce the amount of hard-drives by 4 drives and keep Raptor as only drive in this system. Also I will buy the Antec P180 -case for the new system because I have read a lot of good reviews of it.

Now to the real problems at this moment:

1. I have thought about the CPU-heat sink and I have come to the solution that the Thermalright XP-120 would be the best solution here but the problem is will it fit on my motherboard without damaging the motherboard: My MB can be found on the compatibility chart, but it says "caps mechanically obstruct pipe slightly, cap tilting necessary" -does anyone have actual experience about this - Can the Thermalright XP-120 be installed on the ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe motherboard? For fan here I have thought about Papst 4412 FGL (55,3CFM, 26dB) which I already own or Papst 4412F/2GLL (41,2CFM, 18dB).

2. Then to the GPU - I have read dozens of reviews and have narrowed my possibilities to one product - the Thermalright V-1. Question here is: Is there enough space on the motherboard to install the V-1 and the XP-120 both and still leave some room between them? Fan would be Papst 8412NGML (26,5CFM, 19dB).

So this is what I have planned, suggestions are welcome

yeah the xp-120 will fit. it said the same thing for my motherboard. all you gotta do is carefully tilt the cap a little to the side to make it fit. it will be a tight fit against the cap, but it will be ok.

so your going from 760gb of hard disk space down to 36gb? did you change your mind about all that dvd copy'ing/tv recording/porn collection thing?

id suggest using 120mm nexus fans all around. but try to use as few as possible, and at the very least set them to 7volts. make sure you get a high effeciency PSU like from seasonic or antec. check the PSU recommendation list for idea's. if the V-1 wont fit id suggest going with the zalman vf700-cu, you can mod the stock fan for an L1A 80x15mm panaflo if its too loud for you, but you probably wont mind the stock fan from looking at the system your used to listening to. especially once its on the fanmate and set down to 5-7volts. the only other thing i can think of is with the hard drive. if your mind is set on it i'd look into either getting a Smart Drive 2002-C , or at the very least suspending it with some elastic cords.

that about covers every noise source in the computer. i hope things go better for you in your quest for a quieter system.

Thank you! :)

I was thinking about hanging the Raptor somehow to the P180 lower drive-cage with some strings - something like this http://koti.mbnet.fi/zerozone/hard-drive.JPG. What do you think? As it will be the only hard-drive in the system I don't think it would be too hard and I don't have to worry about the space around it.

Hi CoreFusion,

if you are uncertain about the XP-120 fit, go for the SI-120. It has very little compatibility issues, if at all (I haven't come across any), and cools as well as the XP-120 if not a touch better (depends on the reviews you read). Price point is similar.

I have the Papst 4412F/2GLL mounted on a SI-120 at 5V - great cooling and no noise.

36 GB seems a tad to small to fit in Windows + programs + games.. alot of games weigh in at several GB. I'd go with 72 GB version...

Hi,

I have seen the SI-120 but will it really be as efficient as the XP-120? I don't have previous exprerience on heatpipes so I really don't know.. I would prefer the XP-120 if it will fit.

I know that - I have 38 Gb of installed games right now :). For the 36 Gb I have been thinking something like this:

7 Gb for windows (I now have 6 Gb)
1 Gb Swap
6 Gb for programs
and 22 Gb for games :)

I think I can manage that. But if there's difference in sound of those two drives then I have to think again. So which one is quieter the 36 Gb or the 72 Gb?

EDIT: How hard would it be to silence to Raptors on RAID 1 compared to one Raptor? Two Raptors in RAID 1 would make some killer speeds to games and programs :D.
