I'm sick of the loud, hot, unefficient P4 2.4ghz in the dell my dad handed me down.. Does anyone know if a pentium M like the 533mhz fsb (the inspiron I believe takes 400fsb or 533fsb) will swap in? Also what about HSF? the one that's in there is loud and inefficient, and also suffers from a design flaw where dust builds up to the point that the machine overheats (roughly every 2 months, cleaning of heatsink with compressed air or a full lung blow is required)
If it's possible, I'd really like to spring the little chunk of change for a new P-M, and make back whatever I can selling the old 2.4 on ebay (probably worthless)

Doubt it, Pentium M is socket 479, P4 is socket 478 or LGA775.Does anyone know if a pentium M like the 533mhz fsb (the inspiron I believe takes 400fsb or 533fsb) will swap in?
Not at all, a 2.4GHz 533fsb Northwood P4 is still quite sought after (good for overclocking).make back whatever I can selling the old 2.4 on ebay (probably worthless)
What you want to look for is a Pentium 4-M CPU, these swap straight into socket 478 motherboards (although your motherboard probably doesn't support Speedstep, which is a shame).
Well actually most of the 479 pin ones, (1.7ghz and up) afaik many sellers include the ASUS bracket to adapt. I was actually wondering if anyone knows FOR SURE if it'll work. I'd rather go with a 533mhz like the 740, however if it won't fit with the ASUS bracket, I'll just end up going with the 400mhz 1.6ghz dothan.

The Pentium M actually has 478 pin, but Intel calls it 479. The layout of the pins are different from that of the Pentium 4 so that you cannot simply drop in the Pentium M. Also the Pentium M requires a chipset that would recognize the CPU.

The ASUS 479->478 adapter only works on a few specific ASUS motherboards. You can't just drop it in any old 478 motherboard. Sorry, but your stuck with P4s for that thing. As jaganath said, you could probably do a P4-M. But I don't think these are much better than the P4s. Just have the speed step to reduce idle power. Which again, is dependant on the motherboard. Which, I doubt the Dell supports.kenji wrote:Well actually most of the 479 pin ones, (1.7ghz and up) afaik many sellers include the ASUS bracket to adapt. Actually, the P4-M's TDP is about half that of the mobile P4 (~30W vs ~60W) as well as having Speedstep. Not many people know that. Check it out on the CPU spec page:you could probably do a P4-M. But I don't think these are much better than the P4s. Just have the speed step to reduce idle power.
