What cools your HDD better?

Post by GLO » Thu Mar 01, 2007 6:26 am

Im curious to know what would provide more efficient HDD cooling.

The options are:
1. CoolerMaster 4-in-3 Module for Stacker

or the

Hard Drive Vibration Silencer

The difference being that the CoolerMaster 4 in 3 module has a 120mm fan blowing across all the HDDs

and the Hard Drive Vibration Silencer relies on the heat being absorbed by the aluminium rails with a fan circulating air (but not as direct as the CoolerMaster solution)

What do you think?

Thanks :?:

The CoolerMaster will provide the better cooling by far. It will expose the HDD(s) directly to the outside though so it will be noisier.

i guess that if i was to retro fit a 120mm fan to blow directly across the HDDs then i could achieve a more efficient cooling with the silencers.

If you attach a fan in front of or behind your disks, you'll have better cooling performance than the 4-in-3. That thing's real purpose is fitting 4 drives in a small space.

Have you considered a fan + homemade elastic suspension? it's cheap and works well.

The reason for i like the Coolermaster 4 in 3 or Thermaltake iCageImage
is because it does have that fan blowing air over the HDDs and because they are a 5.5 to 3.5" HDD solution.

I would use a case like the CoolerMaser 532 Centruion which has filtered front panel and front mounted 120mm fan to blow over existing HDDs.

Sounds like the HDD Silencer with a 120mm up front would be the most efficient and quietest solution around.[/url]

The shot below shows my CM Stacker after I got rid of the 4-in-3 (the grommets were becoming less and less effective - or maybe the HDDs are getting noisier?) - the front has been removed.

Thanks for that update. Do you use any fan to blow across it now?

Sure, you can see it (?) just behind the drives. There's too little space for one in front, because I used the mounting holes for the elastic bands.

i have the iCage

it makes 3x 5.25" bays into 3x 3.5" bays

it keeps the drives nice and cool at around 30°C (load or not)

but it's noisy (even after changing the TT fans to coolermaster sleeve @ 7v)
