1800€ - Allround build - 45% discount

Post by SilenceDK » Tue Apr 01, 2008 2:56 am

Hey guys,

It's time for me to retire my god old rig as it's getting too unstable.

Intro
I'm gonna buy it through my work so I'll save 45% compared to the prices listed below and therefore naturally want to buy more or less the best I can get without buying something directly stupid. I've got a budget of roughly 1500-1700 €

I play games and am gonna do some movie editing soon. I use photoshop as well at times.. so I'm a allround.

I've got a Nec 20wgx2 pro 1680x1050 screen, which I love.

Components - I was thinking of the following components:
  • Antec Performance One P182 - 849 kr. / 113.86 €

    Corsair HX520W - 632 kr. / 84.75 €
    520 Watt PSU / Intern

    Core 2 Duo E8400 3 GHz - 1.160 kr. / 155.56 €
    Core 2 Duo 3 GHz / Socket 775 / 1333 MHz / 6 MB L2

    ASUS P5K/EPU
    738 kr. / 98.97 € [/b]Socket 775 / Intel P35 Express / 1600 MHz / ATX / 0CPU / LYD / 2xPCI-32 / 4xPCI-E / BundkortxRDRAM / 1xFW400

    Kingston HyperX 2 x 2 GB - 660 kr. / 88.51 €
    2 x 2 GB (4 GB) / PC2-6400 / 800 MHz CL5 / 2 V /

    Samsung SpinPoint F1 HD103UJ 1 TB - 1.459 kr. / 195.66 € - OS disc

    750 GB / 7200 rpm / 16 MB / Serial ATA-300 / 8.9 ms

    Logitech MX 518 Gaming-Grade Optical Mouse - 254 kr. / 34.06 €
    Mus / 8 Knapper / Optisk / 1600 dpi / PS/2 / USB 1.1 / Sølv / Sort / 1 Stk.

    Logitech G15 Keyboard (Danish) - 499 kr. / 66.92 €

    Scythe Ninja PLUS SCNJ-1100P Rev. B - 258 kr. / 34.6 €

Pris i alt 8.543 kr. / 1145.67 €
  • CPU Coolers:
Should I go for the Scythe Ninja or Thermalright Ultra? - Is the price difference worth the extra cooling?

    Kabinet coolers
Would it be a good idea to replace all the kabinet coolers with the Noctua NF-S12-1200?

    CPU - Dual or Quad
Should I perhaps go for the Core 2 Quad Q9450 2.66 GHz instead?

    Harddrives
I've chosen the 1 Tb as I've heard it performs as a Raptor and have chosen the WD GP as a download disk - A good choice?

    GFX
I'm gonna wait for the new 9800 series GT or GTX to come out..

    Comments
Comments are more than welcome, as I've been outta the game of high-end builds for a while.

Hello and welcome.

Nice setup. Either coolers will work fine, Thermalright will keep the chip a bit cooler and allow more overclocking. Your choice of CPU depends on your own use and how long you plan to keep the computer. The Q9450 will help only if you use video/graphics editors and converters a lot. Games actually suffer a minor performance loss. You will also get better overclocking results with the E8400 as it has a multiplier of 9 (versus 8 with Q9450) and only 2 cores.

If you're looking for quiet system, then yes, replace the Antec Tri-Cool fans with Noctuas or Scythe S-FLEX and get a fan controller.

I would go for the Quad, when you are building a very high-end machine which should last for while, until more games will hopefully benefit more from it. And since you edit videos and graphics a bit, its a no-brainer as I see it.

I'm just wondering how loud 9800GT/X will be compared to the rest of the system. It might make a replacement of other coolers a non-issue.

About the 1TB, I doubt it comes close to a Raptor, but even if it doesnt in most real life cases I dont think it will matter that much, just because most stuff you run isnt held back due to the harddrive. If the extra money isnt an issue at all, a small Raptor for the OS, some games and apps might give slightly better performance.

I've heard from quite a few ppl that the 1 TB drives comes close to a raptor in regards to performance.. but it's only the 1 TB drive, not the others.

I think I'll go for the Quad then with the Thermal thingy CPU cooler..

But can u comment the system in general? Things you would add/change/remove? Any good advice?

If you're looking for the absolute fastest hard drive, then get a raptor. Its 150 gb which is plenty for a system disk. When people say that there's 1tb and 750gb drives that beat the raptor, that is only true in transfer rates, as the raptor is SATA150, while others are SATA300. These are just benchmarks that do not simulate actual computer use. The 10k rpm Raptor can not be beat by any current 7200rpm drive.

As for the rest of your system, it looks like a fast, quiet, high-mid end system that'll go strong for the next few of years.

Seems like a nice system overall.
If I should change anything it would probably be:

A X38 Motherboard instead of P35. Mostly because its newer, not a whole lot better, but I dont see a reason not to pick the newer stuff unless its way too expensive.
Wont recommend any, since it really comes down to personal preferences what you want. Some offer lots of weird extra stuff on the motherboards.
Both Asus and Gigabytes X38 should be good though.

Some other memory brand than Kingston. Crucial, Corsair.
Kingston is usually a bit cheaper than others, but also a bit worse performance. And DDR2 is so cheap these days anyway, that one might as well get the best.
Like these:

Beside that, 9800GTX doesnt really seem to be worth it right now, its not really faster than the cards it replace, just more expensive. Think I would just buy one of the cheaper cards and then maybe upgrade later, since the 8800 cards are still doing fine in any game other than Crysis (and nothing is doing fine in Crysis).
But its certainly not easy, Im wanting to build a new pc too these days, but cant decide whether to wait for better cards or not :)
With your deal through work, waiting for an upgrade later might not be an option of course. If you really want to go crazy, there is of course the 9800GX2, which Im sure can make more noise than anything else in the pc, beside making water boil on it.

Might also pick the HX650W PSU, while its hardly required, it adds the bit extra room for upgrades in the future.

Cant really comment on the fans. My current PC is anything but silent, hence why I want to get a new one, and is lurking around here :)
People seem to be all over the Slipstream fans right now, so maybe they are a better choice? (the 1200RPM ones, this setup will surely need some cooling, better to be able to turn them up and down as needed)

I want to thank you all for the reply's as they've been great!

I think I'll wait for the next gen GPU cards as ppl say they're gonna come out in june.. - The 9900 series?

I'll take a look at the Mainboard and ram as well, but as one of u've said the system's only a high-mid - What should I perhaps change to make it a monster which can last a bit longer?
