Need advice on low power consumtion gb switch

Post by Schroinx » Wed Apr 02, 2008 2:59 am

It should be fanless, minimum 4-5 ports, cheap and with low power consumption.

I would imagine you'd have a harder time finding a switch that fails these criteria than finding one that meets them. You're basically looking for any consumer-grade switch. I'm personally a big fan of the blue steel-encased Netgears (have had some problems with their newer, shiny white plastic stuff).

I have a couple of those Netgears as well. GS105/108. They are passively cooled and are very compact. The ac adapters are rated 12V 1A, so no more than 12W, but I think I measured mine to draw ~5W? Not sure how much that fluctuates with load.

I think this is exactly what you're looking for:

I bought one a few days ago, works like a charm. It's fast, runs pretty cool and max power consumption seems to be 10w. Also, it's one of the few switches that support jumbo frames.

I was so happy with this one that I bought the 5 port version as well. Should be here any day now.

Thnaks. I can see now that metal casing and ports back/lights front is a nice ting. But I'll go with the netgear, as the 2w in difference does not make much of a difference.

I've used many Procurve switches. Their 408 was pretty fast for 10/100. I would imagine their 8port 1400 series would be quite nice also.
