Which is cooler - the Q6600 or Q9300? Enough to matter?

Which is cooler - the Q6600 or Q9300? Enough to matter?

Post by potsy » Wed Apr 09, 2008 10:46 pm

Hi all,
Tomorrow I'm going to update the Mobo/cpu in my system, which you can see here: viewtopic.php?t=43893&highlight=0db

I'll use a Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R Mobo and I'm trying to decide between the Q6600 and Q9300 processors. Both will do what I need easily, but I turn all the fans off in my system for short periods while I'm recording music. I think the Q6600 runs hotter, just because it comes with a bigger stock heatsink is 65nm rather than 45nm. If the Q6600 runs significantly hotter then I'll pay the extra cash for a Q9300. Does anyone have an opinion about what the difference is and whether it's enough to worry about?
Thanks heaps,
Potsy

The difference is huge. See Anand's numbers here:

Thank you line. A third again in power consumption - well, I'd have to notice that! The Q9300 is the one to get.

I have some very preliminary data on running a Q6600 (G0) v Q9300 on a Gigabyte G33 board. Below is the difference in system power draw at idle/load with Q9300 being the lower:

At stock speeds 2.4 v 2.5 GHz
Stock VCore – 10/21.5W
RMClock (lowest) – 9/12.5W
BIOS undervolting – 3.5/13W

At 3GHz
Stock VCore – 6.5/24.5W

perhaps if you picked up a tower heatsink CPU cooler, you wouldn't have to worry as much about having your fans off. The Scythe ninja or Thermalright 120 come to mind.

Hi all, thanks for your help. Just thought I'd let you know I ended up with a dual core E8200 instead. I'm mostly doing audio recording/editing and the general consensus is that this type of software runs better on dual cores at the moment. I'll tell you what, it runs nice and cool!
