P5N-E SLI memory issue

Post by cowsled » Mon May 26, 2008 8:41 pm

Hey guys, I just got myself P5N-E SLI and I'm having issues installing my 4th gig of ram (KVR800D2N5K2). With 3 gigs it runs fine but it just freezes on boot when I put the 4th gig in. I tried updating the bios (the update said "improved memory compatibility"). I was wondering if anyone had any idea as to how I could run all 4 gigs without having to run them at 667.

Otherwise, could anyone recommend a similarly priced mobo? SLI please :).

Thankies.

Sound like a problem with one of the memory slots in your MB, at least i have not heard about that kind of a problem before. Or have you tried to put your memory sticks to slots 2 & 4 only? And to make sure, are all your memory sticks same type?

Yup, tried every combination I could think of and it's a nogo. It's also all the same kind of memory. The instant I put in that 4th gig it freezes on boot. I thought it was an issue with my MB at first but, I found that it was an issue with every P5N-E.

Make sure the RAM voltage is being set correctly. I had similar problems to this - I have 2 unmatched sets of RAM (2x1GB OCZ, 2x1GB Geil), and despite the Geil being rated at 2v, it ran fine with just the two Geil sticks at 1.8v. But the minute I put all four in, I need 2v across all the sticks to get stability.

Are you using custom memory timings, or are they set to auto?

Considering that I didn't understand what you just asked, I'm going to answer auto. :P

Noob info:
You can check your memory voltages by entering your BIOS (pressing DEL at certain point of startup) and going to voltage-section. You can exit BIOS with ESC-key (depending the bios, there might also be a menu option "Exit without saving".

One more "make sure": Have you tried 2*1Gb with all different combinations of stick-pairs? (ti make sure it's not one of the sticks faulting)

Yup checked them all. All fine. How can I change the voltage? Any risks?

Just to verify:

You have used the new RAM in a combination where the machine did boot?

For example, replaced one of the older sticks with one of the new and it ran OK?

To alter the RAM voltage you need to get into the BIOS. On most Asus boards you press Delete right when starting the machine. Consult the motherboard manual for exactly where the voltage settings are - Asus manuals break down every BIOS function and indicate which menu each thing under.

The spec voltage for your RAM is 1.8v, so verify it is set that way, or if it is set to auto, set it manually to 1.8. I wouldn't push the voltage higher than that - if all modules are the same and none are defective it ought to at least POST at that voltage.

Yup, cycled the ram and it worked fine. Went into bios and lowest setting under manual is 1.92V. Tried that, and still no go. I get this error telling me that I have no A drive which I disabled 0.o.
