Re: new build
It's hard to give any critique, when you don't tell us what purpose your computer is build for.maleus11 wrote:read the sticky...hope i'm not breaking any rules.

To me it looks like a mixed bag. Raid5 suggest server, even though 3-drive raid5 isn't really ideal for server. E8400 is quite powerful, but then you have 8400GS which is useless for gaming.

IDE is slowly on its way out, more and more obvious with the majority of motherboards only with one IDE port available.
you'd get better speeds out of a SATA 300gb/s drive rather than IDE.
NEC, LiteOn, Asus and Samsung make great DVD+/-RW drives, BenQ also does.
I assume your RAM is 800mhz?
450W should be fine, i don't see why you could need any more than that.
case is just personal preference.

the system is being built largely around my home audio. i have a sonos in one room and squeezebox in another. all of my audio is mp3 or flac. i'm moving toward flac images with cue files (approx 500mb per CD). the process is laborious if you do it yourself and losing all of my music would be catstrophic. Otherwise, all I need is a reliable computer to handle MS Office, email, and internet AND I don't want to upgrade for 12-24mos or more.
So RAID 5 is for security...i wasn't aware 3 or 4 disc arrays made a big difference. A hardwire ethernet gives me WOL for power conservation. MOBO was chosen to be ATX/support Core2Duo/have a RAID controller. Needed an inexpensive Graphics Board that approximates Intel 3500. I won't be gaming. I do some graphic editing and video editing. The whole system has to be quieter than my laptop and 2 ext drives because I listen to my music in the same room.
I've been looking at the 380psu from corsair. The cases i'm considering are: Kublai KL01B, Solo, Lian Li cases (from newegg 119.00 or less several choices).

I realize IDE is out but I have 2 300gb drives that are worth very little and would act as decent system drive/back-up system drive combo (one internal and the backup ext).
LIan-Li cases options are
PC7B, A59B, PC61, PCA098, PC8B, PCA01A
I would think that a 120mm fan in the front with three rubber gromet mounted drives behind then a second 120mm fan on the back would be a good combinatiion of antivib/quiet and cooling. i've read elsewhere on this site that this combo can be very loud.

out of my personal experience if its just for being a music server, you could just use an old junker and just get some new drives, and at most a PCI RAID card for it. i use an old celeron system (soon to be upgraded a little).
the specs for my music server will be:
2.0ghz Celeron
512mb DDR RAM 333mhz
TYAN S3098G2N
GeForce FX5200 PCI
Trendnet 10/100 Ethernet PCI card
1x 40GB system drive
1x 160gb music drive
the whole system will be running on a 250W power supply. Right now it has a Biostar U8668 Grand motherboard. once i get it compiled, i'll see if Darwin can run on it...but it's failed to compile at least 4 times on me so far.
optical drive is under debate.
you don't really need much for it.

I appreciate the tips so far. yes, it needs to be a robust and secure music server but i also want it to be my main work computer. if i was only using it as a server i probably wouldn't look for high end components but then again it would be running linux and sitting in the closet where noise isn't so much an issue. If I were to cut back I would go e7200 maybe.
I'd almost like to recommend my setup, Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-SH2 + X2 4850e, but I don't know how processor and labor intensive your FLAC transformation is. E8400 is certainly faster then 4850e. On the other hand AMD platform would be 150$ cheaper then E8400 + P5Q + 8400GS.
AMD platform would be perfectly suitable for your other needs.
