I currently own a Geforce 9800GX2

BFG has a "trade up" program in which i'm eligible to upgrade within 100 days of my purchase. I'm debating on whether or not to go for the
Geforce GTX 280 OCX
http://bfgtech.com/CMDocs/BFGTech/pro=1 ... CX_1GB.pdf
The cards seem pretty close, the GX2 looks faster in some cases but the 280 looks faster in other.
I'd only have to trade in the GX2 and pay about $100 to the the 280.
Could use some good input!
Thanks!

Geforce 9800GX2 vs. Geforce GTX 280

Speed wise, the 280 is at the moment about the same league as the 9800GX2. Unless you are planning on running at resolutions of 2500 or higher, both are going to stick very close together. At the moment, the GTX280's massive bandwidth seems to go to wast.
But, when it comes down to power consumption, that's a whole different ballgame. I'm at the moment building a new rig to cut down on power consumption, and for instance, the GTX260 what rivals the 9800GX2 closely has a 50 a 60w! power usage difference on idle ( and that's what your PC is doing 90% of the time ).
The GTX280, uses about 10w more, so that's a 40 a 50w difference. Another advantage is that the GTX260/280 are single cores, vs the 9800GX2's dual cores ( where the SLI profile can hamper you somewhat )...
I can only speak in my case, but i'm going to sell my 9800GX2, and going for a GTX260.

Id agree that the 280 is a better card than the 9800GX2 for its slightly reduced power consumption, easier cooling and more consistancy (since its not using SLI type drivers which some games dont like). however, $100 is a fari amount considering there is nothing that the 9800GX2 cant handle, unless you need crysis on very high at 2500x1600 res and even then the 280 cant manage a playable framerate all the time either, so their really isnt any gameplay reason why you should go for the 280.
