Requesting comments/suggestions on potential new build
Am helping spec out a new build and would like some opinions, suggestions or comments.
The machine will be used for light gaming, programming, a bit of graphics work plus the general office and internet uses.
Asus P5Q Deluxe (P45) or Rampage Formula (X48)
Intel Q6700 or Q9450 or E8400 or E8500
Corsair XMS2 Dominator TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF
Palit HD4870
Pioneer DVR-215DBK
Thermalright TRUEBLACK120 or HE01+ or Ninja or Minja or downdraft ?
Seagate ST3500320NS (2 or 4 undecided)
Antec Three Hundred or P182 or Coolermaster CM282 or Lancool K7
PC Power&Cooling Silencer 610 S61EPS
Replace case fans with Sythe 800 rpm Slipstream fans 120mm and or Sythe 1200 rpm Slipstream fans 120mm.
Arctic Cooling MX-2 Thermal compound
Thermalright LGA775 bolt thru kit BTK-LGA775R (if needed depending on HSF)
This is the second draft - the first one was a super machine but WAYYYYYYY out of budget

If you want to save a few bucks, the P5Q-e has almost all the features of the P5Q Deluxe at $50 less. Also, the 4850 instead of 4870 would save you a pretty penny, and would be more than sufficient for "light gaming".
The p182 is an amazing case, really great to work with. Memory and processor are all fine. If you really want to make the machine quiet, though, you might want to think about only 1 hdd and a cooler for your video card (I don't see one on the list).
Hope this helps.

I had suggested the P182 but they liked the 300, though it will be harder to quiet. The dual HD's are for RAID 1 redundancy. The 4870 has it's own cooler that is supposed to be fairly quiet. I figured in a 300 it might not be noticed with 4-5 case fans I also recommended the HR01 but they kinda liked the "black" cooler - go figure
They decided on an E8400. likely P45 chipset but mobo is still open.
I'm not too sure how quiet this will be when done - should be interesting to see/hear
Has anyone on SPCR used a Three Hundred case for a system?

Ironically, PC Power&Cooling Silencer is a reliable PSU with reputation among OCers but definitely not silent at all. Well, Silencer is rather loud under loading. Get Enermax, Corsair, Seasonic etc instead if you really want silence from PSU.
As for Case, Xbitlabs has done a great Antec round-up, and you can decide the purchase by yourself. Were I you, I would get P182 over Three Hundred without thinking for silence. Anyway, take a look on your own.

Seagate ....... if you can put up with the sharp seek noise, then it's fine.

Thanks for the input. I have always liked the PCP&C supplies for reliability and longevity. You are right though, when they ramp up under heavy load they are not particularly quiet, especially with the smaller fan. I doubt the system (at least for the foreseeable future would come close to stressing a Silencer 750 (or even a 610) so it may be adequate noise wise.
I would like to suggest a quiet alternative and was thinking perhaps Seasonic M12/600 or Corsair HX620
The Seagates are a done deal I think (unless they change their mind suddenly.
(Actually the more I get into their project the more I want to do one of my own )

Hi,
1. Mobo - definitely P45 but not ASUS. I'm building computers since 10 years and have good reasons to avoid this maker.
2. HDD - as I love Seagate and use their HDD's for storage (and not single one failed in my and my customers rig's) they are not even close to be quiet. 4 of them in the system will make a lot of noise....
3. Case - for 4 x HDD definitely go for P182 - more expensive but much better cooling for HDD's with less noise.
4. Case fan - replace with anything! I'm using Nexus but really - anything will be quieter - Nexus, Scythe, what ever....
5. HSF - in P182 Ninja will be enough - even without fan for E8x00
6. PSU - HX520 is enough (I would even say - overkill)
7. RAM - you can save some cash buying standard Corsair RAM - I'm using Dominator DDR2 CAS4 in my main system and if you don't want OC - you don't need this.
Sorry about my English...
