Starting to gather my components for new build
OK, I've started to gather my goodies. See my previous post.

I have the psu and vid card now.
The mem i spec'd out has an add'l $5 off with promo code that expires 3/16, so I should
pull the trigger on that shortly.
I'm kind of hung up on the case. I would like to spend under $100 and it can't have a psu.
I'm definitely thinking about the Antec Nine Hundred. Anyone have that case with the Saphire
4870 that I just got. I've heard that some case are tight with the newer vid cards.
Also, I've no clue on a dvd burner other than some have suggested it by sata. I think because
of the cable for air flow. My previous build (5 years ago) I put in a dvd rom and a dvd burner
and a floppy. I'm definitely not putting in a floppy, can't remember the last time I used it.
Do most of you put in 2 dvd players/burners?
Also, I'm still up in the air about getting Vista (have xp now) with Windows 7 on the horizon.
Anyone know if I can use my old xp cd on my new build?
That would allow me to skip Vista altogether and wait on W7.

Pioneer DVR116 seems to be the way to go. I just got one and it's definitely a nice quiet SATA burner.
Haven't used two optical drives myself for many years; suppose it's down to what you use 'em for. I've seen some people bitch and whine about not wanting to use the same drive for ripping and burning, but I really can't see why. I think it's a throwback to the days when people used to invest in (and treasure) Plextor drives when Plextor was top dog (and top dollar).

Don't mean to be picky, but do you mean Pioneer DVR-216D

Might want to check on the upgrade path from XP to W7.
Also you might need to slipstream SATA drivers onto a new XP disc.
Hopefully it would work, I actually ended up using a floppy on my install since the slipstreamed way kept failing.
Of course if you want to wait for W7, you could always install the beta, and hopefully they let you go to the final with the existing install. Or you have to reinstall anyway, but you would probably want to do that even with XP running.
I think I would avoid Vista if you can at this point.
Oh yeah....don't forget to part that existing system out.
Check the prices of Athlon XP's and your mobo on ebay. INSANE...
*of course, you could always price it cheap on here, someone would jump at that setup...especially when you mention it has Soundstorm on board*

Sorry, I don't know what you mean about slipstreaming.psiu wrote:Might want to check on the upgrade path from XP to W7.

I don't think the beta is still available for W7
Keeping old system, for an extra for the household.
slipstreaming means putting the sata drivers inside the cd you install with.
It requires getting the contents from the cd to your disk, some software magic to put the drivers inside the install files, and then burning again.
look here for XP:
http://www.nliteos.com/guide/part1.html - part2 handles the driver part.
handy for sp3 integration as well if you don't have that yet.
for vista:
