55W enough for Atom 230 single core?

Post by nmuntz » Mon Apr 27, 2009 7:02 am

I have an old morex 55W DC-DC power supply from a via mini-itx system. Would this be enough to run an Intel BOXD945GCLF, 2.5" HD, 1GB ram and a fill size CDROM? This is for a headless server so it won't be too heavily taxed other than occasional CD ripping.

From what I can tell, it looks like it should work, I'm just looking for comments from someone who has experience with that board.

When the heck is Intel gonna ship an atom board with something other than a 945?

My guess is it should work, my only hesitation would be the full size optical, I don't know how much power they use.

*My guess is entirely based off of netbooks. The power adapter for my EeePC 1000ha with 2gb ram, laptop hard drive, 10" lcd and crummy speakers is 36W, which is more than enough to run the Eee and charge it at the same time. As long as there isn't some major power hog that I am missing, 55W should do fine.

Should definitely work.

They already do, just not as a retail product. If you've got the inclination you can get "Industrial" boards, that use the US15W, for ~$250. You'll get a retail version with something better than 945 if NVIDIA starts selling a retail version of Ion. That may never happen, though.

My Atom 330 with no optical drive pulls between 32W (idle) and 42W (boot). The difference between an Atom 230 and 330 are negligible. The only problem might be the CD-ROM.

agree with karl. I have also an atom 330 pc and is only slightly faster than atom 220.
Idle consumption is around 23w for the 220 and 31w for the 330. Power peaks are slightly above 40w.
