I have a XFX 9800 GT card that I've identified in my system that is busily about doing it's imitation of a vacuum cleaner.....time for a change!
SO, I need recommendations for a QUIET SINGLE SLOT video card that has decent performance. And by decent, I mean something at least at the level of the nVidia 9600 or better (please no recs for the nVidia 8xxx series - just too old....).
Anybody had any luck with a really quiet single slot card that has good performance?

Have a look at Rivatuner. Its possible your graphics cards fan is set at a stupid (read: 100%) level unnecessarily. You may be able to quiet it done a lot while its idle, and only have it ramp up when stressed.
EDIT: To answer your actual question: Gigabyte has a passively cooled 4850 which might work for you. From what I've read you need a decent airflow in your case for it not to get too hot, but you can't get much quieter than no fan!

Re: Recommendations requested: Quiet, single slot Graphics
Hello and Welcome to SPCR!
You don't really need to buy a new graphics card; invest in a cooler and couple it with quiet fans. I'm thinking of something like the Scythe MUSASHI: http://www.scythe-usa.com/product/vga/0 ... etail.html
Why exactly single-slot? Is space too limited in your case? If so you might be interested in this discussion: viewtopic.php?t=54174. Also, you seem to be pretty uninformed; many GeForce 8 Series cards have been rebranded as GeForce 9xxx cards. Under the hood it's all the same.

If you have spare space above your current graphics card, a Thermalright HR-03 Rev A aftermarket GPU cooler could be good if you install it so the cooler is on the 'reverse' side of your graphics card.
Otherwise you might have to rely on software control for a stock single-slot fan solution. Try Rivatuner first on your current card and see if you can control fan speeds.
If you can take the performance hit, there are single slot versions of the ATI 4670, which is reasonably quiet. There is also a passive Sapphire version of this card that uses a Zalman VNF100, which again takes another slot of space above the graphics card, not below. Some versions of the ATI 4850 are also single slot, but will have very high temperatures and may not be so quiet anyway.
