NSK3480 and IFX-14 ?

Post by Ice Tea » Tue Sep 01, 2009 1:23 am

Has anybody managed to fit a IFX-14 in the NSK3480 as the edge of the LGA775 boards look very close to PSU shelf but i'm unsure if the IFX-14 hangs over the board or not.

Thanks

which LGA775 board? they're not all the same

my board which is the ASUS P5K-VM has the cpu cooler holes like about 2 capacitor diameters away from the edge of the board. compared to the similar board GIGABYTE GA-G33M-DS2R which is further from the edge.

It never crossed my mind when buying the board that the mounts are not all the same.

the OP in this thread has the GA-G33M-DS2R with a Xigmatek HDT-S1283 in the NSK3480.

GA-G33M-DS2R

your boards appear similar, possibly even got more room ?? (i'm just using the 4pin power header as a guide from the cpu cooler holes to the edge of the board) so a S1283 would fit for sure, with dimensions (W) x (H) x (D) mm 120 x 50 x 159

you have to check the IFX-14 dimensions and compare it. i'm too lazy sorry :P

Cheers Dude

That link with the pics help.

Even if it is a tight fit i dare say i could bend it a little :D

btw the ram slots are closer to the cpu socket on your board compared to the other one and the IFX 14 appears longer. :?

so you might have issues in that way.

Yeah i'm having second thoughts.

Maybe i should just stick to something somebody else is already using in the NSK 3480.

It's just that xbitlabs had better results passive cooling with a IFX-14 than a scythe orochi. :)

I've got this board with a Thermalright HR-01+ on the CPU cooler - dimensions of the HR-01+ are L110 x W60 x H159.5mm.

In comparison, the IFX-14 is L146.2 x W124 x H161 mm. This means it is an extra 18mm wide on either side, length-wise ((146.2-110)/2=18.1).

From memory, the HR-01+'s edge is just about equal to the side of the motherboard (maybe 2-3mm inside the edge or thereabouts). By my guess, the IFX-14 will overhang the motherboard edge by about 15mm then - which may be too much for the NSK3480.

What CPU are you planning on using? My HR-01+ is doing an admirable job of keeping my underclocked/undervolted E5200 at 2Ghz/1.0V cool enough with only a Slipstream 800rpm at 5V mounted on it (only fan in entire case).

Don't be obsessed with passive cooling - one or two undervolted fans on the CPU heatsink and rear exhaust (<600rpms) will be virtually inaudible and give you much better temperatures.

I can really recommend the HR-01+ and that motherboard as a good combo, which should fit in the NSK3480. The SB and NB get pretty hot though, so I've swapped in a Thermalright HR-05 IFX on the NB and a Zalman NB47J on the SB. Pics of this set up (my main system) are linked in my sig.

The main thing to worry about in the NSK3480 is the stock PSU fan - you might want to consider a fan swap - the Noctua NF-R8 fan would be my choice.

Thanks for that Jamie

I wonder if it could be twisted around so it's mounted upwards as then it's 14mm wider than the HR-01+ so a extra 7mm overhang.

My build will be using a E8200 which i hoped to run at stock.

Wonder if anybody has ever got a Scythe Orochi in the NSK3480 as the Orochi is taller than wide at 120mm .
