hard drive recomendations 1.5tb or 2tb depending on cost

Post by mark19891989 » Wed Sep 30, 2009 5:30 pm

im looking to replace the hard drive in my server with somthing quieter, and with a larger capacity,

im looking to spend as little as possible , whilst as quiet as posible on a budget.

what modles do you recomend that give the best cost:noise ratio?

thanks Markp1989

You are going to get a lot more space per dollar if you don't get the newest biggest drives, so 1.5TB or even 1TB . 2 1TB drives are much cheaper than a 2TB, and in most cases it's not a big deal to have more drives.

As far as noise goes, cost is not really a factor. It's mostly just a choice between a top performance model or a slower (but lower power and quieter) model. I'm a fan of WD so I'd recommend a Caviar Green if you are willing to sacrifice high performance for low power, low noise, and it's also a good value.

honestly, I don't think you can beat the price/performance ratio of this drive

For what you are looking for, I would recommend a 5400 RPM drive. They seem to cost less, have less vibration, and are just flat out quieter drives. The samsung f2 series is a reputable one. and for 80 bucks with free shipping? Pick up two of em and you got yourself a couple terabites

Im based in the uk , so things are gona be abit more expensive then here.

i already have a 1tb drive, that is gone be full in about 2 months,

like you said, its cheaper to get 2*1.5tb then it is to get a 2tb

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166989 same drive you recomended to me, just its just more expensive here.

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164264 this is a 2tb, its almost twice the price of the 1.5tb

im gona be selling the 1tb hard drive to a friend , we came to a deal , 50 quid, with all my films/tv shows/music on it. cant be bad lol

when i have the cast im about 90% sure i will go with 2 F2 1.5tb drives.

would give me 3tb in total . and hopefully they will be a bit cheaper by then :D

im hoping to set up software raid0 for for a 3tb volume, but i dont know how if you can boot ubuntu from a raid0 setup, so i may have to have another drive fror the os drive.

Just making sure, you do know if one of the drives fail, you will lose everything on that array?

Sucks to lose 3tb of data if some of it is not easily replaced! (I know, I tried it :()

i understand that would happen, tbh, my 1tb isnt backed up atal. so if that 1 drive fail i will end up in the same position.

none of my media is irreplacable, i dont want to lose it, but i can get it again if it does go missing.

idealy, i would like 4 drives, in raid10 or 01 i cant remember which way round lol, but i cant afford 4 of them , i cant really afford 2 of them, but you know lol

Even though your media is replaceable, why not just use each disk as a single partition and not bother with the RAID0? That way, you can use all your space and the loss of a single disk will only affect the files stored on that disk.

The only potential benefits of RAID0 are:
- performance (which you probably don't need here)
- you can use all disks as a single partition

I have booted Ubuntu from a Linux software RAID1 before, so I'm fairly sure you could do it from a RAID0 if that's what you want.

just got the 2 * 1.5tb drives today, i havnt raided them , just have them as seperate partitions right now,

they are quiet,

now my server is nice and quiet, its not silent, but its quiet :D
i have 3 low speed ffans, 1 on the gpu, 1 on the heatsink, and a blow hole,

both hard drives are screwed in a metal cage from an old case, that is mounted on polystyrine, so there are no case vibs :D

i love the quiet :D
