Orochi in Antec mini P180

Post by JackyPerformance.com » Sun Feb 14, 2010 3:09 pm

Does anyone know if the Scythe Orochi cpu heatsink will fit in an Antec mini p180 case? I'm looking for the best air cooling for a core 2 duo cpu for a 1ghz overclock, so I curious if I can get away with this combo.

The Orochi fits but its performance is ridiculous. If you want the best, get a Noctua D14 and use the 12cm fan to replace the back Tricool. If you want the second best one, get a Megahalems. If you want great value, get a Mugen 2. Either way, don't get an Orochi unless you want your cooler to be just BIG. Which is cool if you ask me, by the way.

Consider a Thermalright HR-01 Plus or a Scythe Ninja

Consider a Thermalright HR-01 Plus or a Scythe Ninja.

Either should fit, should perform at lease as well as the Orochi. And either of them can be used for passive cooling, though not with an overclock. Still, they should be able to work with the least amount of airflow.

For some reason I can't fathom, the Orochi doesn't seem to test out that well when it comes to cooling performance.

The orochi shines when it`s used as a passive cooler in zero moving parts systems or with a single, slow exhaust fan. Few, if any, heatsinks can match in in this regard. But for more conventional uses I don`t think it`s worth the hassle, a ninja/mugen/true/hr01/noctua d12/xigmatec hdc might be a better choice.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone, I'm leaning towards the Noctua D14 with 12cm fan option at this point. Do you guys think it will enable a Core i7 920 cpu to achieve 4.0 Ghz on air cooling?

4Ghz

Post by ces » Sun Feb 28, 2010 12:29 am

According to xbits the following will permit you to get it up to 4Ghz:
o Thermalright Venomous X
o Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme С
o Cogage Arrow & Thermalright IFX-14
o Noctua NH-D14

With some extrapolation these probably do so as well:
o Noctua NH-U12p SE (regular Noctua tower with 2 fans)
o Prolimatech (with 2 fans)

And with a nice 140mm fan, even these downdraft Heat sinks can approach that on a QX9650

o Thermalright AXP-140 (3.825 Ghz on a QX9650)
o Noctua NH-C12P (3.95Ghz on a QX9650)

i'm at 4.1-4.2ghz@prime95, on my i7/920, with a mugen2, so that d14 should have no problem doing it... just use the stock noctua fans.
