Scythe Mini Ninja in Apex MI-008?

Post by sdheda » Sun Apr 11, 2010 11:38 am

Hi all,

I am upgrading my HTPC, and needed some help with my heatsink. BTW, this will be my first time doing a mini-ITX build.

I have the following parts for my new HTPC:
CPU: Intel i3 530
Board: Intel DH57JG
RAM: A-Data 2x2GB DDR3 1333
Case: Apex MI-008
PSU: Winmate DD-24AX

I have the following usable parts from my old HTPC:
HDD: Seagate 7200rpm 2.5" notebook drive
Heatsink: Scythe Mini Ninja
Fan: Scythe S-Flex fan

I wanted to go with the Mini-box M350 case, but that would require modding the stock heatsink, and I would have to use the picoPSU. So I decided to go a little large with the Apex MI-008 case.

Anyway, I wanted to know if I could mount the Mini Ninja inside the Apex MI-008 case. Since I will removing the stock PSU in the case, I was thinking it would be possible. However, the review states that there will only be 10cm of clearance for a larger heatsink, but the case is almost 13cm tall. The heatsink is 11.5cm. I would think there would be enough room.

I just wanted to get confirmation if it was possible or not.

Thanks.

It won't fit unless you cut holes in the top for the caps of the heatpipes to stick out.

Why don't you get a top down cooler and cut a hole in the case right above it?

Cover the hole with a FilterRight filter. It will blend right in with the case and look like it came from the factory.

How much height do you have to work with? That would determine which top down to use.

I guess I will try the stock heatsink first. I have a Zalman Fanmate which I can use with it to make it quieter if needed.

I heard that is possible to replace the fan on the stock Intel heatsink.

Is there a guide anywhere on how to do this?

Go look at some of the older SPCR heat sink reviews. There are some example of it there.
