Gutting My Computer

Post by gsxstylee » Wed Aug 25, 2010 5:46 am

Hello Everyone,
I am about to gut out my computer which has very old hardware(everything is 3+ years old). I am planning on keeping my case the Antec P-180:

Everything else will be replaced(except HDs). Here is what I am thinking about putting in:

PROCESSOR:
Core i7 870 Processor Boxed - $229.99 (http://www.microcenter.com/single_produ ... id=0319779) - its close by I could grab it in person
OR:
Core i7 860 Processor Boxed - 199.99 http://www.microcenter.com/single_produ ... id=0317378

MEMORY:
G.SKILL PIS 4GB (2 x 2GB) - $129.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231365
or
G.SKILL Trident 4GB (2 x 2GB) - $124.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231282

MOBO:
ASUS P7P55D EVO LGA 1156 - $144.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131407

VIDEO CARD:
GeForce GTX 465 1024MB - $209.99 http://www.microcenter.com/single_produ ... id=0339398 - I plan to SLI it when it becomes cheaper

SSD:
Crucial RealSSD C300 CTFDDAC064MAG-1G1 2.5" 64GB SATA III- $144.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820148357
OR
Kingston SSDNow V Series SNV425-S2/64GB 2.5" 64GB SATA II - $93.99 with Rebate http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820139132

There is also a bundle for MOBO/second ram for $254.98
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDeal ... mbo.479904

The only things I am really missing are a wifi card, and a monitor as far as I am concerned (If anyone has good suggestions for either let me know, wifi must have packet injection) . Remember that I have other SATA HDs that will be staying around from the old machine. I am also interested in a CPU Cooler that would fit the mobo/case if anyone has any good ideas.

The computer will be used extensively for a variety of tasks from gaming to software development. Let me know if I have overlooked some details/there are better deals elsewhere. How loud will this video card run does anyone know? Thanks a lot!

That 870 is killer. At only $30 more, and $50 less than Newegg, don't let it pass you by. You won't technically get 15% more performance from it than the 860, but it will run a bit faster at everything, and the added cost is minor, compared to the rest of the build.

P.S. I just read that Intel is looking at price cuts in just a few days, so depending on when you're buying, it may be a sign of the near future, more than a great 870 deal.

I can understand, with almost no aftermarket cooling choices, getting some GTX 460s for features, or trust in brand, at the expense of noise...but an nVidia blower? Don't do it.

triple channel ram

AFAIK, the i7 cpu chip requires, or at least works much better with triple channel ram. Best value is 3 sticks at 2GB each, for 6GB total.

What video card would you recommend instead? I have always gotten ATI/AMD in the past, thats why I was leaning towards an intel/nvidia build, but without an nvidia card I can save on the motherboard since I won't need SLI support.

Over that kind of cooler? Any.

There's an eVGA reference, which, for whatever reason, is not applicable for the lifetime warranty.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814121391
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814125333

Non-reference models. The jury is still out on the best, except that the reference, harder to find in 1GB than 768MB, is generally a safe bet. No aftermarket coolers quite yet, nor any review testing several non-reference together, makes for a tough choice. But that style with the squirrel-cage fan will get loud under load--not just loud by SPCR standards.

Socket 1156 is dual-channel.

I think an HD 5830 compares very well to the gtx 465 and has a lot of options for aftermarket cooling and card varients with different coolers on them. Same price, too.

Microcenter is awesome.

BTW I would do this RAM instead.. seems like that stuff you have listed is kind of a waste of money...

Intel Core i7 870
A-Data XPG Gaming Series 4GB DDR3-2000

What resolution will you be playing the games? That'll set the baseline for gpu needed. Off the bat though, I'd stay away from the 465 and the 4830. The 460 outperforms the 465 in most apps, uses much less power, and runs cooler. The 4830 is a bit of an abortion: power hog, minimal performance gain over the 5770. Better getting a 5770 or 5850 instead.

First of all, abortion is a poor choice of wording there. Maybe you meant abomination..?

Second, most of the reviews I have read of the 4830 have put it solidly ahead of the 5770 and it is no more of a power hog than the 5770 or 5850 compared to the performance. Check the Hard OCP review, among others.

Back on topic, the 460 GTX or 5770 would both be good, just depends I guess on what resolution you are running, as previously mentioned.

Eep - meant the 5830, if it din't come across correctly. Here's an alternative viewpoint from Anandtech to [H]OCP. 75W more load power than the 5770 for just a little more performance. Better off getting the 5850 and have a lower TDP and better frame rates. On a frame rate per watt used basis, it's a stinker.

abortion: meant as slang. As in, poorly conceived as a filler product and should have been killed during development.

or by Merriam-Webster:

3: arrest of development (as of a part or process) resulting in imperfection; also : a result of such arrest
