What memory with XP in my new system??
Hello guys!
First time writing in the forum but i am really a silent pc veteran!
I have my computer for 9.5 years now(!), the only things that have survived from the original configuration is the motherboard (qdi) and the case but heavily modified...
Completely silent pc offcourse, but it is time for a new system.
My new system is based in Gigabite GA-X58A-UD3R motherbord, i7 930, hd 5850, ocz revodrive pci-e x4 system disk etc silent components...
I have decided to keep the XP as the OS in my new system.
The only thing that i havent order yet is memory modules.
1) It is true that xp dont recocnise above 4gb memory??
2) Witch specific memories do you suggest that fit with this motherboard, with the i7 overclocked and with windows xp??
Thanks you very much and sorry about my bad english...

Ok in that.Get a kit of 2x2GB modules.
But bear in mind that i will overcklock the system.
So what mhz i have to choose for the memory?
The Gigabyte site states for the motherboard:
6 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 24 GB of system memory(Note 1)
Dual/3 channel memory architecture
Support for DDR3 2200/1333/1066/800 MHz memory modules
Support for non-ECC memory modules
Support for Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) memory modules
Lets say, the below memories will fit good with my system??

Gigabyte X58A-UD3R uses triple channel RAM (LGA1366 platform doesn't use dual channel, unless i'm mistaken).
3x1gb would suffice in the current situation. XP would run just fine, and you would have no problems. If it were my system, I would look into Windows 7 x64. Windows XP isn't going to really utilize 8 cores anywhere near the efficiency of Windows 7.
I'm not entirely a huge fan of Windows 7, and I have been using my MacBook Pro a lot more often than my PC, but given the scenario, I think Windows 7 x64 would be a good choice along with 6gb of RAM, rather than 3gb and Windows XP.
Your system, do what you want, just my $0.02.

Damn!Intel just cut the price of i950 to same as i930 so there is no point to buy the latter anymore. I hope you haven't yet purchased the CPU.
I have already bought the cpu...
But in a good price, for only 224 euros.
Ok guys. I just bought the apacer 2gbx2 2200.
Well, i insint in xp because i want to compare the power of my new system directly with the power of the old.
In another time i will put some more current os...
Thanks you!
Some food for thought when using XP on a machine with a lot of RAM:laskos wrote:Damn!Intel just cut the price of i950 to same as i930 so there is no point to buy the latter anymore. I hope you haven't yet purchased the CPU.

- if you multitask, XP will aggressively write RAM of minimized programs to disk (virtual memory), slowing down stuff considerably when switching between applications.
- XP has very primitive prefetching compared to Vista and 7 (Superfetch). Starting programs after having booted windows will be much slower on a mechanical disk in XP compared to Vista or 7.
- On a SSD, XP will not have native TRIM support contrary to 7.
Again, the OS choice is up to you, but keep in mind that XP is ancient technology and clearly outdated compared to Vista and 7. The above list is only a very tiny list of reasons why 7 or even Vista would be better on modern machines.
