I am looking to pick up a power meter. Are there any killer features that would be mice to have that are not available on the average 30$ units ?

I borrow mine from the power company - for free. My only recommendation would be to check with yours to see if they have a similar deal!

The newer Kill-A-Watt's can accept your $/KWH and give you $ figure for a period of time. Older units (like the one I have) only report the instantaneous watts. I suspect both Newegg and Amazon have good users reviews to help you decide.

Good point about recording - I haven't even seen non-recording models these days, but presumably you will want the unit to monitor kWh over a longer period of time and not just guess it based on current consumption.
