New i5 system, any advice is welcome

Post by karkee » Mon Nov 29, 2010 2:33 am

I am currently ordering new hardware to build a new rig.

So far I have these parts im pretty sure off to buy:

I5 760 (Noctua U12P SE or mugen dont know yet)

Asus P7P55D-E Pro

4x2 Kingston Hyper-X

Corsair 2,5" SSD F120

Seasonic X-750

MSI Hawk 5770 (already have this one might go for 6870 upgrade, the hawk still has enough power for the games I play sometimes like WoW + its really silent card)

Antec Solo

Scythe fans/nexus/noctua don't know yet :p

If theres anything you would change let me know :)

Hi karkee,

I'll go for a x-650 instead,
Scythe muggen 2 rev.b for the cpu, cheaper and you can buy nexus real silent fan with the extra money to change the Antec fans from the Solo

The first week of January will be the "launch party" for Sandy Bridge: are you sure to want to invest on a dead platform at the beginning of December? IMO only very urgent production needs, or very huge savings may justify it.

However, about the SSD, go for either a Crucial C300 or an Intel X-25M (at "worst" for a Samsung 470): see relevant dhanson865's threads on the Silent Storage section for more details.

Well I really need a new system I don't mind having old platform aslong as everything works like I want it to.

Any reason why you would pick the X650 I know 750 is way to much for my system but I got it the same price as the X650, I hope the x750 isnt making more noise if thats why you would take the X650?

Well, obviously you are completely free to act as you may rather, nevertheless I'd like to point out that it's not just a "being cut to edge" affair.
The january upcoming Sandy Bridge will be noticeably faster, draw less power (especially at load), while maybe being a bit cheaper:
"...the Core i5 2400 should give you an average of 23% better performance than the Core i5 760 at a potentially lower point... ...the Core i5 2400 should actually perform like a Core i7 880 despite not having Hyper Threading enabled... ...this analysis was done without a functional turbo mode, so the shipping Sandy Bridge CPUs should be even quicker. I'd estimate you can add another 3 - 7% to these numbers... ...Not only will Sandy Bridge be noticeably quicker than Lynnfield, it'll draw less power... Sandy Bridge's integrated graphics is good... The fact that you can get Radeon HD 5450 performance for free with a Core i5 2400 is just awesome...
and moreover it is the path to future Intel technology upgrading, while the current LGA1156 socket is simply EOL, dismissed, dead: as current i5 won't be cheap, it should be worthwhile to know.

Regardless of these considerations, keep in mind that SSD issue: that Corsair F120 seems to have currently one of the worst failure rates in the industry, while about the X-650 (or even the X-560), it just has a marginally better efficiency, something not to be completely neglected in an about 150-200W Solo system.
