Will this quiet system run cool enough?
Have a quiet system all built out, now I'm worried if it will run too hot.
Case: fractal design r3
CPU: I5 2500k
GPU: XFX 6870 (new twin fan design not the one with the reference cooler)
CPU Heatsink: Scythe Mugen 2
Motherboard: Asus p8p67 pro
Ram: 2 x 4gb G Skill Ripjaws
PSU: Antec tp-650
HD: wd caviar black 640gb
I'd like to run this with just the 2 fans (one front, one back) the case comes with, my main point of concern is that the gpu cooler doesn't really push any of the heat out of the case, it just cools the cwrd and dumps the hit air into the case.
If that cooling setup isn't good enough how would I have to adjust it, hopefullfy no more than maybe a fan on the side or top? Also if anyone has suggestions for better components (at around the same cost as the ones I've picked) feel free to offer suggestions there too. Thanks for any help.

Re: Will this quiet system run cool enough?
kinda depends on your ambient temperatures, but you should be alright...
if not, you could run the second fan in the front too. with that you might be able to lower the fan speed a little to get more airflow with similar noise levels.

Re: Will this quiet system run cool enough?
As far as I can ascertain, the Mugen 2 is not compatible with LGA1155.
Re: Will this quiet system run cool enough?
I don't know where you got this from. There is a known problem with some specific motherboards e.g. Asus P8P67 Deluxe, but there is a solution http://www.scythe-eu.com/forum/mainboar ... #post12906.Johnsy wrote:As far as I can ascertain, the Mugen 2 is not compatible with LGA1155.
Re: Will this quiet system run cool enough?
Looks good. The Radeon 6870 is really not a difficult card to cool.
That Caviar Black is not quiet by SPCR standards though

According to various online shops, it is.Johnsy wrote:As far as I can ascertain, the Mugen 2 is not compatible with LGA1155.
Re: Will this quiet system run cool enough?
The 1155 cooler mounting holes are positioned exactly the same as 1156 so there is no compatability issue with the vast majority of motherboards. There seem to be just two Asus P8P67 motherboards - the Deluxe and the EVO - where there is a problem because of a protruding screw that is close to the CPU socket backplate. While the official Scythe solution is to use the Retention Kit v3 SCURK-3000 it looks to me that cutting a notch in the existing backplate would fix it http://61.58.39.140/support/faq/lga1155-mb-cooler.html.
Re: Will this quiet system run cool enough?
I got it from the website which came out on top when Googling 'Scythe'.lodestar wrote:I don't know where you got this from. This site doesn't even mention a revision B of the cooler, so . . .

the mugen-2 rev b is on the front page if you scroll down... googlefu has failed you.
i7-2600k@4Ghz max temps are 60c. not bad for air in the 800D.lodestar wrote:There is a known problem with some specific motherboards e.g. Asus P8P67 Deluxe, but there is a solution http://www.scythe-eu.com/forum/mainboar ... #post12906.
Re: Will this quiet system run cool enough?
Thanks guys, I went ahead and ordered the system last night, swapped the HD out for http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... ]a samsung. Like others have said the Mugen is compatible with my board, there's some heatsink on the higher p8p67 models that blocks it.
Any ideas on the best fan setup? I was talking to some other people and most suggested what I would have imagined it to be, just the standard front fan sucking in, back fan blowing out, and the PS sucking air in from the hole in the bottom of the case. But I had someone suggest make both fans suck in, flip the PSU over so it sucks air out of the case, and pull the cover off the top fan slot of the case and aim the cpu fan up so heat can exhaust there.

Then I shall never use it again!fumino wrote:googlefu has failed you.
