cheap system advice

Post by xev » Mon May 23, 2011 8:18 pm

Hi all, I am looking to build a cheap system for a family member.
I was hoping to use some existing equipment, an intel c2d 6400 2.13 cpu, 2gb of ddr2 ram, a hdd.

I've got a few gpus such as nvidia 8600gt and ati 4830. There is absolutely no gaming need, would the extra power be worth the heat and noise? How are the integrated graphics from a few yrs ago?

What I need to buy:
case, mobo, dvd drive, psu (?)

I want to spend the least amount. And I think a mid tower would be too big, so micro atx?

I haven't been up to date, but what are some relatively cheap intel ddr2 mobos?
Also would like case advice.

Thanks

If you want cheap, I would not custom build one. I would buy a used one off eBay or some other site. If you want new, then check retailers for discontinued models. IMO it doesn't pay to sink money into new components to build a computer using mostly old technology.

Well i figured a case, mobo, and whatever else would be slightly less than $200.
The main reason is that i already have a good cpu (good enough), ram, and gpu.

But I'll look into your recommendations

You would be surprised what you can get for $300 if you shop around for a low cost and/or discontinued model, or even cheaper if buying used.

Thanks. That mobo is for ddr3 but I was looking at that company as well.
I'll post what I was thinking tmrw.

I've got the stock intel cooler which should be more than enough.

It looks like a decent case, mobo, and dvd drive are all that I need. So $100 is a safe estimate for all 3.
