P4 with no heatsink?

Post by cloneman » Fri Sep 16, 2005 7:38 pm

"If you attempt to operate a CPU without heatsink at all, recent AMD CPUs will usually be permanently damaged within seconds, unless special protection circuitry is available on the motherboard. P4 CPUs will run excessively slow without cooler."

any truth to the 2nd part of this???

got it from www.heatsink-guide.com

Some years ago Toms Hardware tested out what happened when you removed the heatsink/fan while a computer was running. The P4 does apparently only slow down without a heatsink/fan, and does not crash or burn.

The full results are at

It will throttle-down but after a certain point I believe the motherboard will shut it down.

this is really old. today's AMD CPU's also have throttling. i've never tested this however.

edit: to clarify, the throttling might not be on the CPU but all motherboards i've come across seem to support it

My bios (amd 900Mhz on Asus A7Pro) says it has throttling as an option - is there any way I can throttle my cpu without causing it to overheat in the first place?
