I'm looking for a CPU for my HTPC which will be based on a Socket 754 motherboard. I have a Sempron 64 2500+ right now - didn't realize it doesn't support Cool 'n Quiet until after the purchase.
Given the choice, will a Sempron 64 3000+ (Palermo @ 90nm) be cooler, or an Athlon 64 3000+ (Newcastle @ 130nm) be cooler, both with CNQ enabled.
Thanks.
Which S754 runs cooler? Sempron 64 or A64 Newcastle 3000+

Thanks. I figured the 90nm cpu will be cooler.
The 2500+ will likely be used in another machine, so I won't be transfering it to the HTPC. However, good thought on undervolting it - any chance I can get by with the stock heatsink passively?
Also, do you think it's better (again from a cooling/noise perspective in an HTPC role) to use a 2500+ and undervolting it, or to use a 3000+ and enabling CnQ?
Thanks.
