I know I saw a post about custom aftermarket heatpipe NB cooling, and wondered if anyone can help point the way. Unfortunately my ABit AN8 Ultra cooler is no longer cutting it (I'm running my Opty 170 @2.8 GHz, wonder why the NB can't handle the heat... )

Maybe I'll just give into the dark side and go with one of those Cu Swiftech-with-a-fan jobbies, although I imagine It'll be difficult to live with the added noise of a 40mm fan...

Hi warriorpoet, do you have the Abit mobo with the heatpipe northbridge cooler on it? If so maybe the heatpipe is up to the job but the cooling end isn't, could you force more air through the cooling fins. Maybe some sort of ducting to/from the case fan, depending how it all lines up in your case. I haven't thought it all the way through yet but maybe some thing to consider.

I've seen pictures of an Arctic Cooling Freezer with the fan removed and the fins cut out of the center (to clear the graphics card) used on as a northbridge cooler, that was pretty wild, but I can't find the thread any more.

that has been around for sometimes, but the high price and availability has made it a not very attractive option.

In a sense, no passive cooler is completely passive. They all hitchhike a ride on some fan cooling something else.

What kind of CPU cooler do you have? Does it blow on the NB cooler?

Does the case have a strong intake fan that prevents air from flowing in through the Oates vent? Do the power supply and case fan create enough suction?

Are there any air intake routes that can be closed of to create an air flow through the Oates vent?

On my Abit KN8 SLI the NB runs as high as 55c during torture testing with one instance of prime 95 and one of super pi. Removing a decorative aluminum Oates badge on it was good for a 4c drop. It has not blow up yet. During normal heavy usage (2 cores at 70% each) the NB stays below 50c. My OC is not as extreme. Its only 2.4ghz on a 3800 X2 and all voltages are stock.

i dont mind having a larger fan cooling the northbridge but those stupid 40-60mm fans are sooooo annoying

I just solved my problem by cutting a portion of the frame of my Nexus 120mm and softmounting it ~1/4 inch from the back of the case (P180) blowing in. PWM/NF4 temps dropped 8-15c, CPU temps dropped 4c, System temps dropped 4c. Not bad for $0 and 15min. of work...

has anyone found where you can purchase one of those? im really interested because im having a really hard time finding a nice quiet cooler for my dfi chipset...

Hi all, just spent the afternoon trying to understand that Chinese forum.
What I gather is that the cooler was a prototype possibly not even for mass production. Guys were trying a group buy and when price was mentioned it equated to US$122 or AU$163.

Not surprisingly no-one wanted to buy at that price

Though I was also told it's a prototype, it's widely available in Taipei. Can't remember how much I bought it for since that's 2-3 weeks ago - but definitely less than US$ 50. It works quite well without fan on my Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-9 MB since it gets some airflow from a 9cm Nexus on Zalman FB123 bracket suspended over the Thermalright XP-90C.

I'm quite sure it will be availble in the US soon.

Thanks Alan, I didn't realise anyone actually had one!
US$50-ish still seems pricey but it is a nice piece of engineering and will solve cooling problems on a lot of NF4 boards.
It does however make that idea of buying an Arctic Cooling Freezer and chopping the core out seem sensible though

It's here but has a 56k Warning!

I came up with a similar concept about 9 months ago, but couldn't find someone willing to manufacture it. The displayed cooler isn't usable in SLI, while mine is, and has a 900 cm2 area. If someone wants to manufacture it, get in touch and I'll provide details.

I'm curious about the manufacturer also. As far as efficiency is concerned, I'm running the NB cooler fanless (it came with a 40mm fan) with only airflow from my CPU fan, which is a 90mm Nexus.

It's a UK vendor, so probably not much use to you, but it seemed relevant to the thread.

there are couple of things about the Coolermaster NB.

1) Still the same old NF4 clearance issue.
2) A fan which is noisy
3) Performance in Passive mode is unknown.

Cheers jaganath, I think I can get it in Oz or if not I'd get my folks in Edinburgh to post it
BUT my NB is DIRECTLY underneath the (green) graphics card slot so anything vertical won't work and there's not enough 'meat' on that cooler to cut it open and spread it out. I've got an NB47J ready to fit (awaiting Ninja & AS5 delivery) which has a row and a bit of fins removed to fit around the card but I suspect it won't cool the NB enough....

However the reviewer decided to KEEP the 40mm fan on its place, he even did not inspect the fan spec,oh I know, maybe it voids warranty if he remove the fan or maybe the fan was patented with "patent pending non-removable screw". Maybe the NB47 would win if he installed the same fan on it.
