Motherboard noise

Post by wanky » Sun Feb 12, 2006 5:39 am

I have a weird sound coming from my mobo. Its a fast scratchy ticking sort of sound and you can here it whenever the CPU is under load. I have stopped all the fans and it is defiantely not them or the PSU but is coming from near CPU where all the capacitors and mofsets are. Anyon know what it is? I havent had a mobo with noise like this before and its irritating. Anything I can do to fix it? Its a Gigabyte 7n400 Pro

It sound as if its a variation of coil/cap whine/buzz. It is a phenomenon that affects quite a few boards, and seems random.

Suggestions to fix it are plenty, what will work for you... who knows... it still is a bit of a black art.

Have a look in the whining components thread on this site, you may get lucky with one of the suggestions.

Some things you can try.

Change the core voltage of your cpu a little.
Glue the coils.
Heatsink your mosfets (this worked for me)
Try a different PSU.

In the whining components thread someone recently put a good explanation as to what causes this.
