Core2Duo motherboards with Speedfan controllable fan headers

Post by Tzeb » Sat May 12, 2007 2:07 pm

We have this thread, but lately the users haven't been too generous about sharing information with the rest of us about their motherboards. :)
I want to make a simpler thread. I am just interested in the speedfan support for core 2 duo motherboards.
Since there are a lot of user here with c2d motherboards, we could get a lot of info about speedfan support and create a small database.
Post something like this : "so and so c2d motherboard" - speedfan can control x fan headers. Cpu fan header and chassis header.â€

Intel 975XBX (1st revision) - No control with Speedfan.

Note that I have 3pin fans only, the motherboard supports 4-pin PWM fans which may be different.

EDIT: Just read the post below about disabling fan control in the BIOS... Mine was ENabled...

Asrock Conroe945G-DVI: Speedfan can control 4-pin CPU fan header, but not 3-pin case fan header.

Asus P5L-VM: Only the CPU fan header has control, and its lower limit is 5/7V (not sure exactly). 4-pin fan required.

Gigabyte 965P-DS3 - Speedfan can control the CPU and chassis fans separately, must set PWM to "software controlled" in advanced settings, and disable fan control in the BIOS.

Asus P5B Deluxe - Speedfan can control the two chassis fans, tied to one speed setting, Q-fan must be disabled in BIOS. CPU fan control hasn't worked for me.

Both of these are only tested with 3-pin fans.

Iron_Dreamer, you say that Gigabyte 965P-DS3 can control the cpu header with a 3 pin fan?
Here is what Intel says :
Note: when using a 3-pin power connector with a 4-pin fan header, the fan will always be on; there is no fan control.
So, can you confirm that you have a 3 pin fan atached to a 4 pin header and speedfan still works?
Also, where is that chassis fan header on the board? Does it also have 4 pins?

Many motherboards support PWM and DC; you switch between them in the BIOS.

I know this is the case with the P5W DH.

Thank Max! I didn't know that was possible...
I think that is the real interesting thing to find out. What motherboards work with speedfan when a 3 pin fan is connected to a 4 pin header.
Page in the DS3 manual where it explains...

I have the Asus Commando and Speedfan can control the CPU 4 pin fan header, as well as the three 3 pin chassis fan headers.

There is also 3 additional optional fan headers, but I haven't tried them. I think they operate with "Q-Fan 2" which is some Asus quiet thing that works with the temperature.

MSI P6N SLI Platinum

Post by TonyB. » Sun May 20, 2007 9:06 am

The P6N SLI has (1) CPUFAN 4-pin header (controllable with a 4-pin HSF attached) and (3) SYSFAN 3-pin headers (not controllable, though they report their fan speeds).

To clarify the ASUS P5W DH Deluxe features:

The board has five headers (CPU, CHA1, CHA2, PWR1, PWR2). SpeedFan can control the "voltage" of each of the three groups. That is, CHA1&2 share a control, as do PWR1&2.

The CPU header is 4-pin and by default uses PWM on pin 4 to control a 4-pin fan such as the stock Intel cooler. It can support a 3-pin fan by configuring "DC" fan control in the BIOS. Note that this is not actually DC; it is PWM on pin 2.

The other four headers are 3-pin, and use PWM on pin 2 to vary fan speed.

All five headers have speed sensors. The CPU sensor is very reliable, but this is because the CPU header uses "stretched" PWM pulses (about 4 per second) that make some fans click. The other headers don't use this "stretch" feature, so fans don't click, but the sensors aren't very reliable at low speeds, and often read zero.

Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 Rev 3.3.

4 fan headers, 2 x 3-pin, 2 x 4-pin. Speedfan works on both 4-pin fan headers with both 4-pin and 3-pin fans. Pleasant surprise.

Asus P5B/deluxe/Wifi, speedfan 4.32 can control 3 chasis fans (3 pin header) all tied to one speed setting and also the cpu fan which must be a 4-pin one, otherwise it is not controlled. Q-fan must be set to off.
