E6600 or E6420 for overclock?

Post by filete » Mon Jun 04, 2007 9:10 am

Hi!
Now that intel have made a rebate of the price of the core 2 duo processors,
I would like to have some advise from this two, who should be more easy
and will run faster if overclock?

Also, my idea is to get a quad-core when the price fall (when it will be?)
So if now, I will pay less for the processor that would be great,
even if the difference of the E6600 and E6420 is around 30€ Euros.

Let me just say, that I´ve never overclocked in my life,
and I want to do it with the P5W DH Deluxe and the Noctua NH-U9F heatsink.
And for start a 2GB PC6400 800Mhz G.E.I.L ram memory.

Will this components be fine for a smooth overclock?

All the info you can give me will be great!
Thanks

Quad core price drop is July 22nd.

the e6420's that have been manufactured lately are better overclocker than the e6600's that have been manufactured lately. Therefore, I would suggest the e6420.

Why not get the noctua nh-u12f? Bigger fan usually means quieter.

May I suggest the p5k deluxe over the p5w dh. The p5k has better pwm cooling then the p5w dh. It is up to you though.

So soon ah? I was told that was only in December...
Do you have any link that show how much the prices will drop?

Yep, I think that would be the one
Ho much can the E6420 get, without getting too hot?

Well, I really like that one, but I am afraid it does not fit on my case,
its a Antec Sonata (first version). Is there a way to know for sure?

What you mean by pwm cooling?
I was also thinking about the P5B, since I heard reports that in case of going for a quad-core, 965 chipset gives you less problems that 975x chpset.
Is there any true with this?

If not, I guess I just stick with the P5W DH Deluxe, where I can get it
for a real nice drop (around less 20% of the market price).

For over clocking what do you want to get out of it? As for me if I was to be upgrading soon I would most likely go for a E4300, ( its almost half the price in the states of the E6420 ). The E4300 can OC from 1.8Ghz to 3.2-3.6Ghz which is amazing for such a cheap CPU.

The E4300 is also on a 200Mhz FSB which makes it easier for OCing and has the high multi of the 6600 (9x) which makes it even easier. The 4300 only has half the L2 cache (2MB) of the E6000 line.

Heres a benchmark done by anandtech of a 3.38Ghz E4300

If your looking for a LGA775 CPU to tie you over until the Quad core price drops then the E4300 when over clocked offers better price/performance but is about 10-20% slower ( depending on application ) than a E6600 @ 3.6Ghz.

That is exactly why I bought a E4300! So cheap and it does it's job perfectly until I upgrade to a quad core later on.
It has the same X9 multiplier as the E6600, so you don't have to push your FSB has much as with the E6420 to get the same core speed. Of course it's only 2MB of cache, but considering it cut my DVD encoding time by more than half, for less then half what I paid my 630 P4 just over a year ago, I'd say the price is amazing!

Currently running the bus at 266 for 2.4GHz core speed, it's pretty steady. I just bought some better memory in hopes of pushing it to 300 FSB, but I am limited by a limited mobo (Asrock 4CoreDual)... for now.
