Power consumption of 2 systems (old vs new)

Post by Maverickâ„¢ » Thu Jul 19, 2007 5:12 am

In your opinion which between these 2 systems consumes less energy?

CONFIG 1
CPU= Athlon XP-M at 2 Ghz 45 watt (PowerNow!)
MB= ASRock K7VT6 (Via KT600) FSB at 200 Mhz (400 equivalent)
RAM= 2x512 MB at 200 Mhz (400 DDR)
GPU= Geforce 4 Ti4200 downclocked at 125 mhz for core, 125 mhz memory(250 ddr)

CONFIG 2
CPU= Athlon 64 X2 3800+ EESFF 35 watt (Cool&Quiet)
MB= AM2 Micro-ATX with integrated video (AMD 690G or Nvidia 7050)
RAM= 1x1024 MB DDR2-800

thanks! :)

I would say the newer system consumes less power, mainly due to the integrated graphics vs the discrete card in the old system. Of course the second system also performs many times better.

However, if the specs of the old system are sufficient it's better to reuse it or use it a bit longer. During a computer's life cycle most of the energy goes into the production and distribution of the computer.

I agree, use the old system if performance is sufficient. More economical in terms of time, money and materials. Config 2 is likely to use less power in use, though.

The biggest problem of the old system ist the graphics card. Just compare it here (whole system power in Watt). It's also important that the disconnect and PowerNow is enabled. Check with RMClock (?) and S2kCtrl
