35w TDP s939 dual core; where to get one?

Post by fresh » Sun Jul 29, 2007 10:25 pm

Does anyone know where in Europe I can buy any of those. It really doesn't matter whether it's Opteron or X2, as long as it's rated for 35W and has 2 cores.

35W for K8? I know that 35W BE's for AM2 but basically K8 is dead and burried... I doubt you won't get 35W dual core unless you underclock some processor.

I would strongly disagree about k8 being dead. Sure, it's true that it isn't produced anymore, but only advantage that am2 has to offer over it is ddr2 support, which doesn't concern me, since I have ddr moduls overclocked to speed 285 Mhz at 2.5,4,3,7. That configuration offers me bandwidth of 5600MB/s which is 60% faster as ddr2 667Mhz CL5 at stock configuration.

I believe I have noticed 35w TDP procesors that fit in 939, and if that is true, than I really don't see why I should spend lots of money to get same CPU (there are differences but not in performance) on a new platform. I could switch to core 2 duo, but that would cost me even more. Currently I have opteron 144 with 44w TDP and it would be awesome to get dual core with same or even lower power consuption.

When processor is not manufactured anymore it usually means its dead then.

I'd just like to point out that AM2 and 939 are both K8, along with all 754, 1207 and 940 socket Athlon64, 64 FX, X2, and Turion processors.

But it is worth mentioning that AMD is no longer producing 939 processors, with exception of the Athlon64 X2 4800+, and should be stopping right about...now. It's a 110W part, and it runs pretty close to max at all times.

Tnx for information regarding production of s939 procesors Max. Thought they completly stopped the production. I was hopping for information, if any of the shops sell x2 939 with 35w TDP. I know they are hard to get, so in truth I didn't expected to get one so easilly. Who knows, maybe someone who is using it, is just dying to upgrade his sistem and wouldn't mind selling me his. :)

AFAIK there never was a Skt 939 dual-core with 35W TDP, only the AM2 X2 3800+ at 35W (priced like a 4600+).
But you could buy a 'normal' X2 939 (while they last) and undervolt it. How much, it depends on your luck. Here's a link:

AMD had too much internal conflict with mobile and desktop divisions fighting over the 35W binned parts. So they relegated the 35W parts for mobile and starting binning 45W parts for desktop -- which explains the new 45W X2 parts.

I believe the only 35w s939 part was a single core 3800, not x2. You may be out of luck. You could try undervolting an x2 though like the other poster said.

I would buy a manchester x2 and undervolt it.
My x2 3800+ runs fine at 1.1 V (2 GHz). I measured the system power at the wall socket during idling (no C&Q) and full multithreaded load, the difference being 35 Watt. Thus the CPU does likely not consume more than 40 Watts, taking in account VRM inefficiency.

So ic. Well then, I will take your advice, buy manchester x2 3800+, and hope I don't get power hungry version. However, undervolting filthy procesors usually doesn't pay off. Buddy has b2 revison of core 2 duo, undervolted to 1.0v on stock frequency and it consumnes more power than MO revision, that runs on same clock at 1.2v.

I will buy a random x2 manchester and cross fingers I get 45 tdp revision.

Thank you all for your generous advices.

Just curious, did you succeed in undervolting your new manchester?

I switch over to the intel side now. Those new revision are really cool and besides, 45nm is coming out soon.

AMD can't afford to be arbitrary like Intel is. The laptop vendors loved doing Intel desktop-CPU on mobile during the worst possible era (Prescott-in-a-laptop???) and a 35/45W AMD chip would let them do it again... they need to do *anything* for a design win at this point with Penryn around the corner.

Maybe price the 35W's at a small discount to the laptop chips?
