It wont damage them. But I'm not so sure that it wont do any help cos that thermal tape is not so good conductive. Maybe you get better results of with thermal glue from arctic. But 50 C is not much...

It should be of some benefit, more so if the memory heatsinks can catch any airflow within your case.

See Chris Thomson's use of memory heatsinks to cool his motherboard VRM in Quiet DIY OC'ed Pentium D 830 System, Part Two.

do you mean VRMs? or am i missing something..

anyway, it can't do any harm if you have them lying around. the thermal tape shouldn't be too much of a problem, as the heat flow rate wouldn't be that high anyway. it is already travelling through plastic remember. (and better than nothing anyway).

It wouldn't hurt I don't think.

Themal tape *is* thermally conductive--certainly better than no thermal material--just that are yet better conductors. It would do fine though I think, hopefully there is at least some airflow near the VRM blocks.

If you have a motherboard with a low-phase-count VRM that has MOSFETs that get really hot, then sticking DRAM coolers on the MOSFETs will definitely extend their lifetime. (Typically low-end motherboards have 3-phase VRMs, while workstation and high-end motherboards have 8 or even 12 phase VRMs. The more phases, the higher the efficiency and thus the lower the waste heat and temperature.)

How to tell? If touching one of the small black square blobs near the CPU on your motherboard makes you go YOW!! then a heat sink will help. However, don't mistake a MOSFET for an inductor (which is passive and not subject to heat-related failure). A MOSFET is a small low-profile component, whereas an inductor is much larger, and often has the word "RIO" printed on it.
