fastest core2duo cpu that can run passive on a ninja revB

Post by hexen » Wed Jan 09, 2008 11:10 am

i realize that a new line of chips are just now coming out from intel, but i was curious what is the current fastest core2duo cpu that can run passive with no overclock on a scythe ninja revB?

is quadcore possible? (Q6600)
and if not then can it be made silent (slow running cpu fan?)

Well, why passive? Your going to have some fans in your computer, right? Are you going to have a case fan close by?

I'd say that quadcore is going to be a little hot to run passive. Most people can't run anything new truely passive...

At the risk of repeating myself for the 100th time, a little bit of airflow (12cm @ 500 – 600 RPM) over the CPU heat-sink is good for the CPU and the motherboard and will be silent if the case is on the floor.
There are specialised situations where passive cooling might be a necessity but for a typical desktop it seems like a wasted effort. I say this because you mention quad cores although when the cheap 45nm quads arrive later this quarter I might have to eat my words. I’d still personally use a fan as I prefer lower temps if it costs me zero noise and a small amount of money.
