Bought it today and you know what ? It was the last one.
But they still have plenty of 8200 left.

Paid £ 148.99 ... that's about $ 295.-

The only downside is I can't test it cause the motherboard I want is out of stock ... man ! this whole thing is like looking after mosquitos: if you caugh one - another one escapes ...

While I was in the city I looked around for 24 inch monitors. Looks like HP is promoting its W2408H monitor real hard. You can see it everywhere. I really like the design of the stand - the most beautiful thing I have ever seen - BUT ... the frame around the panel is so thick that it spoils the whole thing again. It makes it real chunky.

Ive decided to skip the wolfdale CPU's and just wait for Nehelem to come out. They (wolfdales) area definite step up from the 65mm conroes, but on reviews ive read they just dont provide quite enough of an improvement over my E6600 to make it worth it.
Ill give it a year and then upgrade and by then hopefully ill be able to see a big difference in performance and power usage.

It says on the chip:

Intel (M) (C)'86 E8400
Intel (R) CORE TM2 DUO
SLAPL MALAY
3.00GHZ / 6M / 1333 / 06
Q748A402

And on a sticker:

Core(TM)2 Duo Processor E8400, LGA775 Pkg
3GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1333MHz FSB, 45nm
S-SPEC: SLAPL
VERSION#: E27439-001 1.225V max PACK DATE: 02/25/08

What might SLAPL mean / stand for ? And what PACK DATE have you got ?

It is very unlikely that Nehalem will be ready for sale this year. Chances are that without strong AMD competition Intel will slowly wind down from the crazy C2D release cycle in the past two years. Heck, Intel already delayed Q9xxx release, so chances are Intel is already slowing down. Plus intel own slides show that 45nm production will overtake 65nm at the end of the year, so Intel won't have production capacity to produce Nehalem until next year anyway.

If you plan to upgrade to Nehalem, don't expect it to show up until Q1 or even Q2 2009.

Couple points about wofldale/yorkfield. Despite recent 8400 availability problems and 9x50 release date pushed away, both of these are already available in xeon counterparts. I have xeon 3350 which is Q9450 equivalent coming in tomorrow. I paid a little extra on mine because I got it as soon as it was released, but you can actually get one OEM for $325-335 or so including shipping if you search deal sites. Same with Xeon E3110 which is 8400 equivalent, those can be purchased for $210-240 currently and should work in most if not all P35 motherboards (check on other hardware forums to be sure though).

According to overclocking websites Intel bins 8200/8400/8500 parts with latter ones being able to achieve better overclock at the same voltage as long as FSB is not an issue.

There are also reports on 8400 parts burning out when people push voltage above 1.4V. It makes sense, and I suppose in some way is similar to first PIV1.6GHz dying after being overclocked to 2.4GHz. So if you're going to overclock it, keep it in mind.

And yes wolfdale/yorkfields are worth getting over 65nm parts. They provide performance boost over 65nm chips, they run cooler and at lower voltage.
