mini-itx 780G board

Looks like a feature-packed board including PCIe 16x slot. It sure will give Intel's upcoming Fly Creek a run for its money. Whereas the Fly Creek's ability to play Blu-Ray is an unknown, the 780G can play it with even with a low-powered AM2.

Here are some pictures of a working board: http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2008/06/06 ... features/1
One passive heatsink for both NB and SB? And is that the tiny Hiper HSF cooling a Phenom quad core? Sounds too good to be true

Here's another one from Jetway:

It's likely we'll see this Jetway NC81 before the offering from the unknown J&W.
Just like its Nvidia 8200 mini-itx cousin, Jetway's 780G board also sports dual NICs.

Actually, I'll dispute this. Most if not all of the new combo tuners (Digital + Analog) come in PCIe rather than PCI. If you want to be able to tune clear QAM with an HTPC, then you want PCIe.AuraAllan wrote:A single PCI slot would have been so much better IMO.fudzilla wrote:.....and a single PCIe 16X graphic port....
Looks to be a great HTPC board.
<sarcasm> Plus it would be totally killer with a 9800GTX! </sarcasm>

Judging from the lack of availability of the mATX cousin (JW-RS780UVD-AM2+) in the U.S., I'd say the mini-itx version may never be available in North America. It appears J&W boards are sold only in the Pacific Rim (I've only seen sites in Oz and Hong Kong selling it).Kanadian wrote:Does anyone know where to get J&W motherboards here in North America. We stand a better chance of seeing the Jetway 780G mini-itx board first.
did anybody see these mini itx boards anywhere? or at least similarly small powerful blu-ray capable mobos? (i can't find any boards that are less han 22.5 cm high, everybody's using 24cm these days).
...
oh btw, why would these boards, if they are for the htpc market, not have s-video outs? Sure many of the fancy tvs have hdmi these days, but many of us still operate on good ol' svideo (which has not bad quality, I might add).

I have not seen any mini-itx 780G board shipping yet. There was some news a couple of weeks ago of a retailer in Asia taking pre-orders of the J&W 780G board. I don't think it will be available in North America, though.Ant6n wrote:did anybody see these mini itx boards anywhere? or at least similarly small powerful blu-ray capable mobos? There are a few mini-itx boards with onboard Blu-Ray capble IGP in the works or shipping. The most hyped one being the Intel G45 based board, of which only the Intel version, the DG45FC is announced to be shipping (it was supposed to be shipping in June but now seems to be delayed until August). The only board that's shipping is the Jetway board based on Nvidia 8200. It's available from newegg.com.
I guess it's the perception that analog TV is dead. But in reality it will take a long time for them to disappear completely. If you want S-Video out, you can get the Biostar 690G board (it's mATX, not mini-itx). But you'll need a fast processor (>2.4GHz) to play Blu-Ray.oh btw, why would these boards, if they are for the htpc market, not have s-video outs? thank you for the complete information
I think i will stay with my current setup, which is using an older small pentium4 shuttle board (25cm x 18cm) (which unfortunately doesn't have pci express). On that I have a pci ribbon cable, and I want to connect one of the low profile ati pci graphics cards, which should be able to play hd.
my space (box) is really cramped, about 22x30x4 cm; and oddly this appears to be the only setup which might be able to play blu ray, and has s-video out while still fitting in the case. ...well, and of course, doesn't cost a fortune.

Because the killer feature of these boards is the ability to play HD without a heavy duty CPU. Since there are no HDTV that only have a S-Video interface (S-Video doesn't support (720 or 1080 resolutions), why would a board who's raison d'etre is to play HD need a S-Video out? If you don't care about HD, you don't need one of these boards. You can just buy a less expensive one that is oriented around SD and upgrade it when you upgrade your TV.Ant6n wrote:oh btw, why would these boards, if they are for the htpc market, not have s-video outs?
I have two Biostar 690G boxes located in different rooms. One box (a PVR) is connected to a 1080p HDTV via HDMI while the other (a media extender) is connected to an analog TV via composite RCA cable.
The reason for this setup is that on the PVR I record HD programs only. I can play back HD recordings on both boxes. Of course on the analog TV I don't see the full glory of HD. But I don't have to separately record SD and HD versions of the same program which would require additional TV tuners and disk space. In this regard analog TV-out still serves a purpose.

Unlike the "vaporware" DG45FC, the J&W board is real and is shipping in Japan:

That's great news that it is on sale, but they might as well be on sale on the moon because we can't get them anywhere in North America. And paying $100 for shipping from Europe or Asia isn't really an option.
If any North American shop is willing to take a chance and stock these babies, I bet they would sell a bunch, but so far I haven't heard of anyone.
Very sad...

I don't have high hopes for seeing the J&W board in the States. I never got a response from their supposed US distributor for inquiries on its availability. Maybe I'll ask someone on a business trip to Asia to pick one up for me.
There's a good chance we will see the Jetway NC81 in North America since Newegg.com already sells the Jetway Nvidia 8200 based mini-itx board. So Jetway is not a new name.
Speaking of newegg.com, for you neighbors north of the border, I read some news that they are planning on opening shop in Canada.

From a horrible babel fish translation of this page on the J&W board, I get the gist that:
The results are not very encouraging for a mini-itx case build.
- * the NB gets real hot
* the board could be a power hog -- it crashes when used with a 90W PSU when playing DVD or under load
The results are not very encouraging for a mini-itx case build.
That "NB" is no North Bridge. From the current product image and past pre-production images without the "NB" heatsink, you can see that the relatively tiny HS (compared to this giganto NB heatsink) covers both the NB and the SB chips! I'm not surprised it gets scorching hot.frank2003 wrote:

I highly doubt the system can operate stable without some kind of active cooling on the combined NB+SB heatsink. It will be a real challenge to put this board in a tiny mini-ITX case and keep the system silent.
Geeks.com has the board!
AMAZING, Geeks.com is carrying the board. They only have a few left. The price is $189.99, a bit higher than I would like but still much cheaper than paying for shipping from Europe or Asia.
