undervolting e8600?

Post by drjunk » Mon Jul 28, 2008 11:27 am

Hi....im thinking of buying a e8600 c2d when its released next month. I was wondering if anyone had any estimates on how good one of these cpu's undervolt on the new e0 stepping?

Im after best power/performance ratio....and im hoping for results of under 1.0V @ 3ghz.

Well its not released, so its kind of hard to predict how well it'll undervolt, especially since most reviews overvolt rather than under.
Your best bet would be to see how the other E8x00 chips tend to do. I hear that the E8400 is pretty handy at undervolting if youve got a good motherboard paired with it, so that bodes well for the new chip.

I read on some forums that some people have them already. I dont want to ask anybody over at xtreme systems....prob get my ass booted out the forum door lol.

Can a e8500 reach 1.0v @ 3ghz?.....Sorry if this has been asked before.

Uh you act like xtreme systems is against undervolting. They are certainly not. Most people go for high, but I've seen some mention of going low as well. I would recommend asking them because we generally don't have early products to play with :)

I don't even have a 45nm to test on, but my E6600 can do 1.17v@3. But you can see how useless that info is for a e8600

I am using an E8400 and an ASUS Maximus Formula. The lowest BIOS setting for the CPU is 1.1V, which translates to a measured 1.056V under load. It seems to be Orthos-stable at 3GHz. I hope this helps.

Edit: As long as you ignore the BSOD I've just had. I still think the E8600 will have a very good chance of being stable (at least for ordinary uses) with similar settings.

Ok...asked over at xs forums and someone estimated around 3.4 to 3.6ghz @ 1.0v :D. If this ends up being true....then im going to get one.

I've been running a new e8400 at stock speeds at 1.0v on a GA G33M-S2H with no problems for the last couple of weeks.

Seems a bit optimistic to me. Some samples will manage that for sure, but don't take it for granted that yours will.

My E8400 needs 1.1v for 3GHz (BIOS set to 1.10v, CPU-Z reports 1.056v under load). But I think my sample is worse than most in that regard.

Lets say the e8600 ends up a great undervolter....say 0.8v @ 3.0ghz.....thats passive cooling territory....right?

It may be possible to use a passive ninja on it, but the E8400 would still be a better choice if your going that route.

The E8400 and E8500 are supposed to be updated with the E0 stepping as well. According to techPowerUp the transition was scheduled for June but as we've already witnessed this has been a slow year.

It appears the E8600 draws slightly less than the E8500 while being clocked almost 200 Mhz higher. It overclocks much better though. Still I don't think 9 W is enough to warrant the much higher price.

Image
Overclocked is at 4275 Mhz. I think an 8800GTX explains the incredibly high numbers.

I'm still gonna buy an E8400 myself though, I think, and save some bucks.
