Help! My system won't POST!

Sorry for a noob question.

My HTPC suddenly stopped working and I suspect the motherboard (Gigabyte GA-MA78GPM-DS2H).
I disconnected all the peripherals and it didn't even POST. Not even a beep.
I removed all the memory modules and powered on, and still no beep.
In this case, am I correct to assume the MB is damaged or any possibility something else is the culprit?
I bought the MB only a few months ago.

If it's really the MB, I guess I need a new one. Any recommendation for a good 780 or 790 MB for HTPC?

Hi,

You can test the power supply by shorting the green wire in the ATX connector to a ground (black) wire next to it -- obviously, it needs to be disconnected from the system to do this. With the green wire shorted, try powering it up, and if it runs (and the fan spins) then you PSU is probably okay. Which means that the mobo is even more likely to be the issue.

Thanks Neil~
I'll try your suggestion. But the PSU fan spins when I turn it on.

xan_user,
The mobo doesn't have a light, but the onboard ethernet connector lights up when I turn the system on. Also all fans (connected to the mobo) spin. But no beep sound at all and nothing's showing up on the screen.

Id have to put my money on a fried mobo then.
:(

I had one die unexpectedly, extremely frustrating!

Do you use a ups? Electrical brownout/spike could have killed it.

Yes, the system was connected to a UPS.
I really have no clue why it's fried.
The only suspect is, after I replaced my internal DVD burner with an external (USB) one (SAMSUNG SE-T084) I have experienced couple of system hangs while watching a DVD movie.
I'm not sure how a USB device can fry a mobo, but that's the only anomaly I have experienced with this system.

I guess I have to RMA it. Meantime, I need a new one.
I know the Gigabyte board has a good reputation, but at this point I'd hesitate to get another Gigabyte one.
