Fanless D945GCLF2?

Post by zapwizard » Wed Mar 04, 2009 12:25 pm

Has anyone found a good way to make the D945GCLF2 or D945GCLF run fanless?
The chipset fan on my D945GCLF was quiet enough until today when it started failing.

I have looked around for larger replacement heatsinsks, but have only found ones with a max TDP of 8-watts. The 945 chipset has a TDP of 20-watts.

Are there any inexpensive heat-pipe solutions that would allow someone to off-load the heat to a larger heatsink that didn't have to fit on the motherboard?

The heatsink uses the spring clip method to hold down the heatsink, it would appear that any northbridge heatsink that clamps down the same way should work.
Failing that then any northbridge cooler with pushpins and just some some thermal adhesive to stick it on there.

I've been using a Thermalright HR-05 on my D945GCLF2 for several months now with no issues - obviously it's only an option if you have decent vertical clearance over the motherboard, but it works perfectly with even a tiny bit of airflow from a case fan.

The Thermalright looks very promising, but I guess I should have qualified my post more.

I am looking for a fanless solution that fits in a 1U chassis, hence why I was looking for a heat-pipe solution that could take the heat off of the motherboard to another location.
