ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 - noisy ethernet

Post by simm1701 » Wed May 06, 2009 12:23 am

Just got an ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 - very low noise set up, solid state hard disk, antec P182 case, thermalright ultra 120 copper heatsink, XFX Nvidia GTX260 black edition (might have to change the heat sink on this but seems ok for now)

Everything is nice and quiet - except the network on the motherboard!

Whenever its accessing the network (and since I have a iscsi drive plus a large NAS store this is often) there is a whine from the network ports.

I'm not quite certain what is causing it, possibly the relay to the leds?

Any suggestions anyone?

Or know of any PCI or 4x PCI-E network cards which wont have this problem?

Thanks

Simon

I heard of similar problems on a Gigabyte UD5 board. There was a whining sound when a network cable was plugged in, dont know if it was only during data transfer.

The problem was however solved by using the drivers on the gigabyte site instead of the newest realtek drivers from the realtek site.

Dont know if it helps...

Are you sure it's the network? New motherboards with powerful voltage regulations sometimes suffer of "coil whine". Here's a long discussion: [snip]

I can't post the link because the forum says "You must have 3 posts before you can post URL's/Links.". But if you google "noisy choke" you will find a discussion at tweaktown:

Having the very same problem OP describes in my Dell Studio XPS today, which has just had a warranty replacement motherboard installed because of a faulty USB port. Its an X58 like the Asus. I'm confident the ethernet port is the cause.

What is the difference between a CAT 5 and a CAT 6 Ethernet cable? I need to figure out the type I need to plug from my PC to my Xbox 360 to get wired Xbox 360 live. Do I get a Cat 5 or Cat 6 ethernet cable?
