Which LOW POWER CPU to replace Sempron LE1250?

Post by djon » Mon Dec 07, 2009 1:23 am

I want to expand my fileserver to also record TV, including HD. I don't think my AMD Sempron LE 1250 can handle that.

However I don't want to exceed 30w when idling ( I use RightMark CPU Clock to underclock) so I need one that can be underclocked to a low idle power consumption.

Which modern AM2/AM3 CPU should I look into?

My motherboard is: Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2H

Athlon II X2 240e seems to be a perfect target in terms of performance and power consumption under your circumstance.

The cpu doesn't do any heavy processing when recording HD. It will simply write to disk. Your sempron will be fine.

I guess I'll try first without buying a new CPU, it's just that the Tuner card (Cinergy HTC USB XS HD) has this listed under recommendations:

System recommendation for HDTV reception

* Dual Core Intel or AMD CPU for HDTV decoding
* 1024 MB RAM (Windows XP) 2048 MB RAM (Windows Vista / Windows 7)
* Graphics card with hardware acceleration for HDTV

so it's always good to be prepared for what to do, should my current CPU not be able to handle it.

Unless you're actually trying to watch the recorded or live HDTV directly on the file server, there's little to no CPU activity needed to record the stream, as the only necessary decoding for that is done by the card itself. It's only when it comes time to watch it that you'll want whatever computer you're using to have the muscle to decode HDTV, not the file server that the recording is located on.
