Power connector on ASUS P7H55D M Evo???

Post by Morten74 » Sun Oct 17, 2010 9:39 pm

Hi guys!

This weekend I completed a build for my dad using the ASUS P7H55D-M Evo (reviewed here: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1019-page2.html]

Everything works great (and temps and noise are impressive), but one thing made me curious - the "8-pin power connector [2x4]" had halft of the connectors blocked by a little plastic-thingy, leaving only 4 [2x2] conectors - I understand this might be hard to follow, so let's try i picture instead:

I'm talking about the power connector just above the CPU slot. I left the plastic-thingy in there and just connected the 4-pin power cable from the PSU (eventhough the PSU actually has 2 cables with a [2x2] connector.

Basically - did I do something wrong (I doubt it, as everything is working perfectly, but just to be sure).

Thanks for any input

;-) Morten

Parts used:
Antec NSK-3480 w. Antec Earthwatts 380W PSU (fan swapped for Noctua fan with ULNA adaptor)
Intel i3 540 CPU w. Thermalright Ultra-120
Integrated graphics
Case- and CPU fans are Yate Loons slowed to approx. 800rpm with a fanmate
2x2GB Corsair XMS DDR3 RAM
WD Scorpio Black 250GB HDD
ASUS DVD drive

Temps:
[Ambient 22 degrees]

Idle:
CPU1: 24
CPU2: 28
HDD: 28
PSU exhaust: 24

After 1½ hours for Prime95:
CPU1: 44
CPU2: 50
HDD: 30
PSU exhaust: 26

Only sound is the 'whooshing' of air...

Thanks for any input

;-) Morten

The connector is an EATX12v connector - it consists of 8 sockets, 4 sets of 12v+ and ground lines. The "little plastic-thingy" is just a blanking plug. Remove it and you can use an 8-pin connector if your PSU provides one. Leave it and you can use the 4-pin power connector instead. Typically lower capacity PSUs have a 4-pin connector only, the higher power units have either an 8-pin connector or a split 4-pin plus 4-pin connector. The use of an 8-pin connector is only likely to be necessary if using a high performance CPU or heavily overclocking, for which a higher capacity PSU may be advisable and is why it is more likely to be a feature of such units.

Thanks! So if I understand you correct, there is no need for me to use both 4-pin connectors of the PSU if I only use an i3 540 CPU with no OC and no graphics card (use the integrated GPU of the i3 540)? The Antec PSU has the split 4-pin + 4-pin connector, but I have only connected one. System is stable (and cool) after several hours of Prime95.

Yes, if the system is stable even under load that's just fine.
