Not found after quite a long search. Does anybody knows what the difference in idle powerusage is between a :

intel i760 with p55 MB (with sata 6 and usb3) and low end GPU
versus a
AMD 965 or 1090T with a 880G MB and the igp on the board

I've seen some comparisons with both having a separate GPU, but I have no direct need for it.

My AMD Phenom II X4 965 + GIGABYTE GA-890GPA-UD3H + two 2.5" hds + 3 fans + DVD burner idles at 39.5 watts at the wall. OS can make some difference especially Linux without AMD proprietary video driver.

Some users of i750/i760 system?

As you already know, there's no way to get integrated video with the i5-750/760. Another thing, the 5-series chipsets don't have native support for SATA3 so any motherboard with SATA3 and USB3 support will likely have additional components which would add to power consumption. I think your best bet is to go with Phenom.

No idea what the idle power consumption is on the GTS 450 but you get the idea.

ha, you put a honking video card on that itty bitty mobo... 55w is very good, does the NVIDIA card throttle when idle?

Yep. If the video card didn't, there's no way it'll use just 55W idle. Haven't really put it through my usual battery of tests (Furmark, IBT, etc), though. I don't think the GTS 450 is honking. For the games I play, it's actually much slower compared to a GTS 250. However, I'm somewhat uncomfortable powering both a Lynnfield+GTS 250 on just a 300W PSU (Silverstone Sugo SG-05) so I went with the GTS 450 instead. The HD 5750 or HD 5770 would have been better alternatives speed and power-wise but I've never been able to fix the silent stream bug (HDMI) on my other cards so I opted for NVIDIA to avoid the issue. Besides, I do use some apps that require CUDA.

I do have another slated build using almost the same hardware except with an upgrade to an i7-860, GTX 460 1GB and ST45SF 450W. The i7-860 and GTX 460 are currently in use elsewhere but I'll be transplanting them to another SG-05B when I find time.

a quick question:

While configuring a 1090T + 880G MB PC (2disks + 4GB) at a local shops web configurator I got a conflict with a 380W power supply. I thought that a 380W supply wouldn't have any trouble with the config? (In practice I will build it in my P150 + 430W power supply)

You'll find most stores want you to buy more expensive power supplies with higher wattage. Granted, there are a lot of no-name 500W power supplies that won't be able to handle that rig but something like the Antec EA-380 should do fine.

Is it the video driver that does the throttling, or does the video hardware do it all by itself?

I find that my NVIDIA 8600GT even though more powerful than integrated GPU in 790GX/890GX it just uses too much juice.

Unfortunately, I believe throttling is done through drivers. Indeed, you can change fan throttling via the NVIDIA Control Panel. If you're using Linux, I have no idea how you'd mimic similar behavior. If memory serves, power consumption just sitting at the BIOS is 100W - almost double the idle power consumption in Windows.

My Palit 450 GTS consumes about 18W at idle (contrary to many reviews that I have found on the net). I have not tested on-die Intel graphics yet but overall power consumption has also to do with specific motherboard design, one model can greatly differ to the next.
